Environmental Health Specialist 1/Environmental Health Specialist 2

About the Position
To perform survey and investigational duties in the field of environmental sanitation to determine compliance with public health laws and administrative rules; to plan, promote and carry out a program for improvement of sanitation standards; and to perform related duties as assigned. This position will work directly with the Lane County Environmental Health Specialists to evaluate and process on-site wastewater applications. This involves coordination with the Planning and Building Departments in the Land Management Division. This position provides a high level of customer service and requires a science related background and/or experience. The successful applicant will work in the office and in the field, training and working with Lane County Environmental Health Specialists. Tasks include site evaluations, inspections, permitting, and compliance assurance and providing technical assistance to applicants, consultants, contractors, and others regarding treatment of sewage by onsite wastewater treatment systems. 

About the Land Management Division Building Program
The Lane County Building Program includes the Building and Electrical Code Administration and Sub-Surface Sanitation sections. Program staff are responsible for providing customer service in areas such as examining building plans for code compliance; issuing building and septic permits; and inspecting structures for compliance with state and national building and electrical code standards. 

Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm

QUALIFICATIONS:
Training:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public health sanitation, environmental health, chemistry, biology, microbiology, entonology, geology, or scientific discipline or a related field.

Experience:
  • No experience is required.

Special Requirements:
  • Registration as an Environmental Health Specialist trainee with the State of Oregon is required at time of appointment.
Possession of a valid Oregon Driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Soil Science education and/or training is desirable, particularly in the areas of septic systems, water systems, watershed, wetlands, etc.
