Justice Services Academic Internship

Buncombe County Justice Services Department is hiring for two (2) paid interns. One intern will be working with Equity and Inclusion initiatives and the other will be focused on Youth and Family Justice issues/programs. The pay rate for these internships is $15/hour and the anticipated end date will be May 2023.

Required Work Schedule:
Work hours are expected to occur between 8am and 5pm weekdays and are not to exceed 15 hours a week. The total number of hours may differ, depending on the selected candidate(s) academic program requirements but will likely be about 200 hours. This internship is a temporary part-time position. Specific workdays and hours will be set with the site supervisor and the student’s academic advisor. This position is flexible work eligible for applicants residing within a 2 hour drive of the County Administration Building located at 60 Court Plaza in downtown Asheville, NC.

Education and/or experience and training required and/or preferred:
The selected candidate(s) should be enrolled in good standing in a Bachelor’s or Master’s-level degree program in criminal justice, public administration, business administration, sociology, psychology, or a related field.

List of Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide project management by planning, coordinating, communicating, and governance to achieve a projects desired result with a defined beginning and end.
  • Develop and design performance metrics and indicators that demonstrate effectiveness of key business initiatives.
  • Synthesize and analyze program data across a program/department and design/develop process improvements, evaluation reports and presentations.
  • Attend and participate in relevant community meetings, presentations, trainings, and/or outreach.
  • May assist in researching grant funding options for grants and prepare report(s) on various options.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required to perform functions
  • Ability to assess business and management data needs.
  • Ability to collect, analyze and interpret data and draw conclusions from the analysis pertaining to the evaluation of project / program objectives.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively.
  • Ability to exercise judgement and discretion in applying and interpreting policies and procedures.
