Data Analytics Specialist Intern (Student Activities)

The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program 
  
The Division of Student Affairs Internship Program empowers students to spend a summer handling a special project for the university designed to prepare them for life after graduation. Interns will work 19 hours per week for 10-weeks. These part-time internship positions offer a competitive compensation package that includes an hourly wage and housing assistance. Undergraduate students only are eligible to apply. The internship runs from May 30, 2023 to August 4, 2023. The application is due by February 12, 2023 at 11:59pm. 
  
Although internships range in subject matter and skill set, each position is designed to prepare all students for life after graduation. An additional component to the internship experience will be a ten-week workshop series to develop students’ career readiness. The weekly workshop will require in-person attendance on campus.

The Office 
Student Activities works with student organizations on campus to provide opportunities for leadership development, organization growth, and support for organization missions.
 
The Position 
  • Work on designing data models to help the unit build a sustainable and efficient way to manage a large load of student feedback.
  • Work will involve exploration of the types of data the unit collects, building report and data templates according to best practices, and developing basic training tools for staff.
  • Software will include Power BI and Excel, with the opportunity to explore additional software implementations within Office 365 or Tableau.
  • The intern will be assigned to several professional development opportunities, including possibly attending webinars on data analytics and assessment best practices.

Learning Outcomes:
  • The student in this position will have an opportunity to explore critical thinking and data analytical skills for practical implementation by a busy, student-facing unit on campus. 
  • The student intern will have an opportunity to explore and employ data analytical best practices, including an opportunity to utilize and training on various software including Power BI.
  • The student intern will have an opportunity to practice interpersonal communication skills as they design a quick-step training guide for staff to utilize the reporting models they create.

Who You Are (Qualifications) 
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Comfort with basic data analytics software (Excel, etc.)
  • Willingness to learn about and implement new data analytical tools, including Power BI and Tableau
  • Basic understanding of descriptive and inferential statistical analysis
  • Some familiarity with theories related to survey design (though supervisor will provide some materials as well)
  • Understanding of data management and storage.

Position might be ideally suited for a student Management of Information Systems, Informatics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, or Statistics, though all majors are welcome.
