FISH & WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST 3 (BIO3) 

Fish Program - Hatcheries Division 
Olympia, Washington – Thurston County

Supervise the automated/manual marking and coded wire tagging operations to increase efficiency and quality while reducing operational costs. 

Plan, organize, direct, and conduct coded wire tag experiments. 

Analyze coded wire tag data to determine contribution rates, allocation, brood-stock identification, and effect of mark selective fisheries!

With that in mind,

Picture yourself providing marked salmon and steelhead for sustainable mark selective fisheries and to conserve and protect native fish and implement hatchery reform, consistent with the agency’s Hatchery and Fishery Reform Policy.

In this dynamic role you will conduct, author, and present research intended to improve the efficiency of marking and tagging operations and the integrity of analytical data.

You thrive in building collaboration and teamwork supervise Fish & Wildlife Biologist 1 & 2 trailer operator’s throughput (amount of fish per hour) and performance.

Our AutoFish System Team Supervisor,

Provides key leadership and coordination of multi-agency marking and tagging projects ensuring the successful completion of all projects statewide on an annual basis. 
  • Provides guidance and training in the field and implements corrective action when warranted. 
  • Develop performance standards and improvement plans for AutoTrailer operators. 
  • Provide in-field supervision of marking and tagging operations. 
  • Document performance/improvements to be used during evaluations to provide a clear path for staff development.
  • Conduct all tag group Quality Controls (QC’s) for supervised staff to establish consistency and to monitor the operator’s effectiveness. 
  • Interagency liaison to assess, interpret and recommend marking and tagging plans for Federal, State and/or local agencies, non-governmental and tribal organizations to ensure compliance with hatchery reform and best science available.
  • Conduct technical reviews of coded wire tagging projects statewide. Responsible for reviewing, recommending, and assessing biological studies related to the application of coded wire tags in salmon and steelhead for WDFW hatcheries statewide. 
  • Negotiate, plan, develop, research, and conduct or oversee technical data collection and coordinate reviews draft reports.
  • Perform coded wire tagging and/or mass marking. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Setting, including hazards: 
  • Automated coded wire tag mobile wet lab, hatchery environment, and in an office setting - work is performed during inclement weather. 
  • Frequently Lift or move 40 pound buckets of fish, pumps, power cords, and other equipment - ability to work around hatchery ponds, and catwalks over hatchery ponds.

Schedule: 
  • Generally, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. – Monday – Friday - with considerable overtime and possible shift work mainly in the spring.

Travel Requirements: 
  • Extensive travel and driving required - up to six (6) months per year, five (5) days a week.

Tools and Equipment: 
  • Ability to use electric hand tools, basic hand tools.

Customer Interactions:
  • Interacts with Biologists, Hatchery personnel, Tribal Staff, and general public.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

   AND 

  • Three (3) years of professional experience in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science or environmental science.

OR 

  • One (1) year as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist 2.

Please Note: 
  • Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
  • A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute for the required experience. 

Certifications/Licenses: 
  • A Valid Washington State Driver’s License. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: 
  • Operating an automated or manual coded wire tagging/mass marking mobile wet lab. 
  • Operating and maintaining Mark IV coded wire tag injectors. 
  • Working with hand tools for general repairs to mechanical devices.
  • With all types of Electronic Coded Wire Tag Detectors.
  • Working in a salmon hatchery environment.
  • Supervising or directing employees.

Competencies: 
  • Knowledge of the coded wire tag system.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
  • Data analysis skills leading to publication of research findings.
