Student Trainee Interdisciplinary (Petroleum Engineer / Geologist / Geophysicist)

Duties

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) manages the exploration and development of the nation's offshore resources. It seeks to appropriately balance economic development, energy independence, and environmental protection through oil and gas leases, renewable energy development and environmental reviews and studies. These positions are located within the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Region (BOEM), Office of Resource Evaluation (RE) in Anchorage, Alaska.

At the full performance level (GS-5) the major duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
  1. As a Student Trainee (Petroleum Engineer/Geologist/Geophysicist), the incumbent performs duties that are designed to provide orientation in the application of academic theories and basic principles regarding hydrocarbon exploration, development, and assessment. Assignments are similar to non-professional employees, but are primarily for training purposes and, in some cases, to assist more experienced professional staff.
  2. The incumbent receives classroom and/or on-the-job training in support of oil and gas exploration and development, assessment of undiscovered resources, and fair market evaluation to assist more experienced staff. The incumbent attends selected training seminars, meetings, and other organizational activities. The purpose of the training is to provide experience in the practical application of basic data evaluation techniques and concepts related to the oil and gas industry.
  3. The incumbent performs geophysical, geophysical, and/or engineering studies consisting of one or multiple OCS-block areas having basic Alaska structural and stratigraphic features, under the supervision and assistance from staff and unit supervisor. Interpretation and analysis will be performed using GIT workstations to interpret 2-D and 3-D seismic data, well log data, and other geophysical, geological, and engineering data with supervision and assistance from staff.
  4. The incumbent will assist in performing geophysical, geological, and engineering investigations to determine the structure and stratigraphic delineation of oil and gas reservoirs on the Federal OCS and contiguous areas.
  5. In coordination with an Alaska BOEM subject matter expert (SME) the incumbent may travel to different locations in Alaska meetings in support of BOEM programs.
Salary Information:GS-05 $40,538 - $52,699 per annum.
Special Salary for 0899 Series (Engineering and Architecture Student Trainee):
GS-05 $49,862 - $62,023 per annum.
First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lower salary range of the grade level.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

Applicants must be able to work in the Anchorage, AK duty location throughout the duration of the Pathways Internship.

Duration of Appointment / Job Status: This is a NTE one year appointment in the Excepted Service.
The incumbent will work up to 20 hours per week during school sessions and is expected to work full-time up to 40 hours per week during school breaks and summer.

All applicants who meet the basic eligibility and qualification requirements will be referred to the selecting official in veterans' preference order.

To qualify for this position you must meet the (1) Pathways Internship Eligibility Requirements and (2) the Minimum Qualifications Requirements defined below.

To be eligible for this internship all of the following requirements must be met:
1. You must be at least 16 years of age
2. You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a degree or certificate program at a qualifying educational institution on a full or part-time basis.
3. If enrolled, you must be in good academic standing (At least a 2.0 GPA)
4. You must provide a transcript (official or unofficial) and proof of enrollment/acceptance.

NOTE: You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.

GS-05 Qualification Requirement:
In addition, to qualify for the GS-05 grade level you must have completed 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

This is an opportunity under the Internship Program component of the Pathways Program. The Internship Program provides students enrolled in qualifying educational institutions with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while concurrently being enrolled. Veteran's Preference is applicable under the Pathways Program.

The United States Department of the Interior will announce Pathways Internship opportunities multiple times per year, with regard to demand.
To be considered for other Internship opportunities at the U.S. Department of the Interior, applicants must apply each time a new announcement is posted. The Work Schedule of the appointee will be based on availability, which in part will be influenced by the appointees' academic course load.
Appointment types may vary from indefinite to temporary (generally, temporary appointments do not exceed one year, however the agency does reserve the right to extend temporary appointments beyond the not to exceed date of the initial appointment). Interns will be required to sign an agreement that outlines the parameters of the Internship Program during employment with the U.S. Department of the Interior. Additionally, in order to remain a part of the Internship Program Appointees must: Maintain a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A) of at least 2.0, whereby, the accredited educational institution must recognize the Appointee is in "Good Academic Standing", The Appointee must be enrolled at least on a half-time or full-time basis throughout their appointment.
