Job Description
The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TPM) is seeking a Graphic Artist to serve as a Project Coordinator within the Street Furniture Unit (SFU). The Street Furniture Unit (SFU) manages the procurement, planning, installation and maintenance of bike parking, benches, leaning bars and wayfinding signage for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders throughout New York City. The goal of these programs is to make the city more walkable, bike-able, and vibrant. The Unit is responsible for NYC DOT’s Bike Parking, WalkNYC Wayfinding Signage, and Seating programs.
The successful candidate will report to the unit’s Design & Database Manager and will play a critical role in the WalkNYC Wayfinding program by assisting with map production and data management tasks for all of SFU. The WalkNYC Wayfinding program provides map-based directional information installed on sidewalks and at selected transportation facilities to help pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders navigate NYC. Duties may include but are not limited to:
· Produce maps for the WalkNYC Wayfinding program using Adobe Illustrator/InDesign and ArcGIS, including assisting in information planning, ensuring quality, accuracy, and adherence to graphic and content standards.
· Review and coordinate production of maps produced by consultants, outside agencies, or other DOT units and program partners.
· Develop and maintain documentation for map graphic and content standards, product templates, and training materials.
· Assist with the design process for new WalkNYC Wayfinding map products and other SFU program elements, as well as changes to existing map products and structures.
· Coordinate printing, deliveries, and installation, and inspection of WalkNYC Wayfinding products and others SFU program elements, as needed. Coordinate organization of inventory at DOT warehouse facilities.
· Develop automated scripts for assisting in the creation and review of maps and SFU datasets, using Adobe Illustrator/InDesign, GIS, or other appropriate tools.
· Perform data entry and other database management tasks for all SFU program databases.
· Perform additional tasks related to the assigned role as needs arise.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
1.A baccalaureate degree, with a major in fine or graphic arts, from an accredited college and one year of full-time experience as a commercial or graphic artist; or 2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus two years of training in an approved technical school in oils, watercolors, painting, design, black and white, layout, computer graphics, and other art media, and three years of acceptable full-time paid experience as a commercial or graphic artist.
Notes: To be qualified for assignment-to-Assignment Level II, individuals must have: (a) at least one year of experience as a Graphic Artist, Assignment Level I; or (b) the Qualification Requirements described in "1" or "2" above, plus two additional years of acceptable specialized paid experience conceptualizing and initiating graphic art projects.
Preferred Skills
Have a sharp eye for detail and ability to manage and advance multiple projects and timelines simultaneously. Candidates should also be self-directed, good at problem-solving, and creative. Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to take direction and flexibility to adapt as priorities change. A demonstrated interest in and knowledge of map-making/cartography, NYC geography, and NYC transportation networks are strongly desired. The selected candidate should be willing to work in the field in all seasons and at DOT warehouse facilities, traveling by biking, walking, or using mass transit. A high level of fluency using Adobe Creative Suite with a focus on Illustrator and InDesign, required; a high level of fluency using ArcGIS (Desktop, Online, etc.), strongly preferred; fluency with SQL Server, Python for GIS, and other coding and programming languages or tools preferred; familiarity with Microsoft Access and other database software desired.

Note: Less than 2 yrs. City Service - New Hire Rate: $58,839, 2 or more yrs. City service - Minimum Incumbent Rate: $67,665
Residency Requirements
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
