Legal Assistant I (Paralegal)
Office of Administrative Hearings

If you love working with Administrative Law Judges look no further. The Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Administrative Hearings is looking for a dedicated individual to provide secretarial support to and paralegal support to Administrative Law Judges.

Participates in legal research and helps draft memorandum of legal research results; conducts factual research and compiles information obtained from investigations under direction of attorney or other legal assistant staff; answers law-related questions, reviews case files, maintains document control, tracking and tracing; searches public and private records; and drafts various routine legal documents.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

The Legal Secretary will need to be able to:
  • process requests for hearings and track the cases through the Office of Administrative Hearings database
  • maintain an Administrative Hearing master calendar
  • schedule and coordinate hearings
  • receive calls and answers questions
  • take and relay messages
  • greet hearing participants
  • respond to requests for information, including GRAMA
  • prepare basic legal orders
  • proofread legal orders
Preference may be given to individuals who possess certification as Certified Legal Assistant / Certified Paralegal. 

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

The model candidate for this position is someone who:
  • has experience as a paralegal, legal secretary, or in another legal support staff role
  • is able to work independently and with other support staff
  • loves working in a small office
  • is able to maintain confidences
  • is detail-oriented and organized

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.

  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
