IHD Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program

The Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program is a 10-week mentor-guided summer research training experience for undergraduate students. Selected students will be matched with a mentor based on their research interests. Throughout their stay at HSC, they will work with their mentors to enrich their understanding of biomedical sciences and health disparities. In addition, students will participate in mentoring workshops, role-model seminars, and other lecture series that will develop their competencies in science, research presentations, professionalism, and communication skills.

Applicants will choose which programs they would like to apply. Please make sure to read the eligibility requirements for each program.

Summer Multicultural Advancement Research Training (SMART)
SMART, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, addresses the significant gap in the number of underrepresented minority groups, disadvantaged populations and individuals with disabilities that enter biomedical and behavioral science careers. This program will provide undergraduate students interested in pursuing biomedical sciences related research, a 10-week summer research experience in a mentor-guided laboratory and workshops to enhance their academic and career development.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Students currently enrolled in freshman and sophomore year
  • 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average
  • U. S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • Major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry or other life science
  • Intention to pursue biomedical research careers
Summer Research Internship Scholar Support:
  • Stipend Allowance of approximately $4,000 (minus taxes)
  • Living Accommodations
  • Travel Allowance

Developing Undergraduate Researchers-Matter (DURA-M) Program
DURA-M, sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, addresses the significant gap in the number of underrepresented minority groups, disadvantaged populations and individuals with disabilities that enter biomedical and behavioral science careers. This program will provide undergraduate students interested in pursuing NIDA-related research, a 10-week summer research experience in a mentor-guided laboratory and workshops to enhance their academic and career development

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Students currently enrolled in freshman, sophomore year or junior year
  • 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average
  • U. S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • Major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry or other life science
  • Intention to pursue biomedical research careers

  • Stipend Allowance (Approximately $3,800)

Summer Scholars in Cancer Research (SSCR) Program
Summer Scholars in Cancer Research (SSCR) is one of the program components of the HSC Scholars in Cancer Research Program supported by Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). This program is designed to provide stage-specific competencies for undergraduates in science knowledge, research skill development, professionalism, and communication. The students will be trained through short-term exposures in the field of cancer and health disparities.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Undergraduate students interested in biomedical research related to cancer and health disparities
  • 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average
  • Students from underrepresented groups (racial/ethnic groups, disabilities, disadvantaged backgrounds) are higlly encouraged to apply

Dallas-Fort Worth Biomedical Research (DFW BR) Program
The DFW Biomedical Research Program is a 10-week mentor-guided research training program for undergraduate students. This program provides broad introductory exposure to biomedical research and health disparities. This program consists of laboratory experience, workshops, lectures, and research poster presentations to enhance skills and build their support network.
Eligibility Requirements:
  • Students currently enrolled in junior or senior year
  • 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average
  • Major in biology, biochemistry, chemistry or other life science
  • Intention to pursue biomedical research careers
  • Must live in Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex
Summer Research Internship Scholar Support:
  • Stipend Allowance (Approximately $5,000)
