Student Intern (Engineering) - Office of Naval Intelligence

Summary

You will serve as a Student Intern (Computer Scientist) at the GG-04 or GG-07 grade level receiving on-the-job training in computer science by performing specific and varied work assignments incidental to the function of the organizational segment to which assigned.

You will assist in developing criteria for improving computer devices.You will develop portions of problem-oriented languages and their translating/operating systems.You will participate in development of advanced concepts of automation and information processing, display, control and transfer.

Qualifications

ELIGIBILITY:

Must be enrolled or have been accepted for enrollment in a bachelor's degree (or more advanced degree) program with a major in Computer Science OR working towards a related degree that includes 30 semester hours in a combination of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science from an accredited or pre-accredited academic institution. NOTE: At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must include any combination of Statistics and Mathematics that includes differential and integral calculus.

To be eligible for the GG-04, you must meet the following required education level: Completion of 1 academic year (30 credits) of post-high school study working towards a bachelor's degree (or more advanced degree) program with a major in Computer Science OR working towards a related degree that includes 30 semester hours in a combination of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science from an accredited or pre-accredited academic institution. NOTE: At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must include any combination of Statistics and Mathematics that includes differential and integral calculus.

To be eligible for the GG-07, you must meet the following required education level: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree (or more advanced degree) program with a major in Computer Science OR working towards a related degree that includes 30 semester hours in a combination of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science from an accredited or pre-accredited academic institution. NOTE: At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must include any combination of Statistics and Mathematics that includes differential and integral calculus.

All educational requirements for this position must be met by December 30, 2024.

Program Completion and Conversion:

Interns may be converted at the discretion of the agency to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-5 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Complete at least 160-320 hours of work experience acquired through the Student Internship Program
  • Complete their degree requirements
  • Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
  • Perform their job successfully

Education

QUALIFYING EDUCATION:

1) A high school whose curriculum has been approved by a State or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum that has been approved by such body or state.

AND

2) Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education:
  • (i) A 2-year or 4-year college or university;
  • (ii) A graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school)
  • (iii) A home-school curriculum
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements, if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. Students will typically work a full-time schedule (40 hours per week) and will have to commit to working a 160-320 hours during the summer months.

You may be noncompetitively converted to a permanent career-conditional or career appointment under specific conditions outlined in the qualifications section of this announcement.

Appointment may be extended for 1 year if student maintains enrollment.
