Grass Expert

Want to work for a mission driven company that digitally maps soil with machine learning to help sustainably produce food and reverse climate change?  EarthOptics is a growing AgTech company developing tools that help farmers more sustainably manage their soil, increase yields and feed the growing world.  We are currently looking for a temporary, part-time Grass Expert, with rangeland management experience, to assist us with identifying and cataloging rangeland grasses from digital photographs. The ideal candidate will be able to identify major prairie speciation for geographic regions ranging from the US Midwest through Texas to the Gulf coast. The candidate will have experience with species inventories by standard methodologies (i.e. NRCS) and forage projections.

Job Type: Temporary, Non-Exempt
Duration: 6-12 months
Work Location: Remote - this remote role welcomes candidates anywhere in the U.S.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Identify grass species and relative density via digital photographs from various ranch and grazing sites located in Texas, North Dakota, New Mexico, Kansas, and Oklahoma
  • Develop and maintain a digital catalog and rangeland inventory of grass species

What we are looking for:
  • Graduate degree with a specialization in grasses
  • Rangeland management background
  • Experience with grass & rangeland plant identification using a dichotomous key
  • Experience with standard species inventory methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience in building and managing a database
  • Proficient with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office products

  • Ability to identify native and non-native plants 
  • Experience with data management and collection management
  • Experience with GIS
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and with geographically dispersed teams
