2023 Spring Flameworking and Properties of Glass Internship

Summary
The Corning Museum of Glass, the international leader in the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge about the art, history, science, and technology of glass and glassmaking has an exciting opportunity for an intern to participate in a summer-long internship with our Flameworking and Properties of Glass Demonstration Team.
The preferred candidate will be trained to perform demonstrations and work on the front line with our guests. The demonstrations to be presented include Flameworking, Glass Breaking, and Optical Fiber (if the candidate is qualified, this may also include participation in Hot Glass Demos as well). 
This internship is an opportunity for a glass student to greatly broaden their knowledge of the possibilities of the material. The selected candidate will be thoroughly trained in many aspects of glass science, flameworking, glass history, and public speaking.
 
Responsibilities
  • Clearly and accurately deliver engaging glass presentations to CMoG guests, including Glass Breaking and Flameworking to CMoG standards
  • Set up work areas with proper demonstration tools, equipment, and supplies
  • Expand knowledge of the history, craft, technology, and art of glass
  • Become familiar with the Museum, the library, and the Museum’s exhibits
  • Ensure that all safety policies and procedures meet CMoG standards
  • Maintain neat, clean, and tidy personal grooming and appearance to CMoG standards
  • Produce glass objects to CMoG standards
  • Supports and amplifies the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access
 
Learning/Training Opportunities
  • Learn about our organizational communication and culture by attending One for All (all-staff), department, and team meetings

  • Training on a broad array of glass science topics including mechanical forming processes and strain-related issues
  • Training in presentation and public speaking skills
  • Training on the collections and exhibitory of The Corning Museum of Glass
  • At least one day per week of additional flameworking lessons and training with master flameworkers Caitlin Hyde and Eric Goldschmidt
Qualifications
  • Respect and exemplify the values of the Corning Museum of Glass in all interactions with colleagues, staff, volunteers and the public
  • Ability to represent the Museum in a professional manner
  • Adhere to all prescribed organizational and departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to flamework at an intermediate level
  • Comfort with public speaking; ability to work and speak in front of large groups of people
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to represent the museum professionally
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. minimum
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed
