Civic Internship Program - City of Kenosha or Kenosha County

Civic Internship Program

Internship Timeframe: Starting in Fall 2023 
Course Requirement: Must enroll in CBL 494: Civic Internship Program
Fall 2023 | Fri 1:00-1:53 | 3 credits
Location: City of Kenosha or Kenosha County 
Pay Rate: a range starting at $14 per hour, depending on specific internship role
Schedule: 10-12 hours per week 
Deadline to Apply: March 1, 2023

Students in the Parkside Civic Internship Program will be prepared for lives of engaged citizenship, with the motivation and capacity to think critically, act, and lead in pursuit of the public good. 

What does “civic” even mean? 
We’re glad you asked! As a Civic Intern, you will work within city government to expand your understanding of how government agencies function while analyzing complex social issues and developing your own identity as an engaged citizen. 

How do I know if I’m a good fit for a Civic Internship? 
Do you see yourself as someone who wants to act and lead in pursuit of the public good? Do you consider yourself someone good at thinking critically and problem solving? Do you enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures? If so, you would be an excellent fit for a Civic Internship! This program is open to all majors, and we especially encourage students who are still exploring major options to apply. 

What will the work look like? 
You will be matched either with the City of Kenosha or the Kenosha County and the will work on site.

Here’s the fun part: this isn’t a “one size fits all” type of internship. We are excited to work with internship candidates to tailor the experience to their interests, strengths, and career aspirations.

  • Recruitment management (schedule interviews, manage application materials) 
  • Job description maintenance 
  • Employee relations 
  • Human Resources policy analysis 
  • Compensation plan administration 
Interns at Kenosha County will work during the fall semester (September-December 2023) with the opportunity to extend the internship experience into spring semester (not guaranteed).

Interns at City of Kenosha will work through the entire academic year (September 2023-May 2024).

Additionally, all Civic Interns will engage in professional development and civic exploration through additional meetings, activities, and discussions, including: 
  • Ride-alongs with a Deputy Sheriff, Public Health team member, Social Worker, Deputy Medical Examiner or a Civic Engineer 
  • Sit-ins for County Board committee and board meetings 
  • One-on-one meetings with County officials, including the County Executive 
  • And much more! 

Not only is this a paid internship experience that will look great on a resume, you will also earn credit for the experience through CBL 494: Civic Internship Program. All Civic Interns will enroll in CBL 494 for the fall term. You will engage in readings, reflections and in-class discussion in order to grow as a civic-minded professional through the lens of your Civic Internship experience.
