Unpaid Policy Internship

The Office of State Senator Gustavo Rivera is seeking energetic, determined, and passionate candidates for a Policy Internship position with our Legislative office located at the Capital Building in Albany.
 
Students who are completing studies in political science, international or comparative politics, public affairs, public policy, and urban planning are encouraged to apply.
 
Candidates with an interest or background in the following policy areas are encouraged to apply for the position: health, criminal justice, finance, education, community development, and organizing, public safety, civil rights, election reform, social services, transportation, environmental, or budgets.
 
This is a perfect opportunity for candidates who are looking to gain first-hand experience with the processes through which the New York State Legislature operates and who are passionate about improving the welfare of New York State through legislative and policy-making measures. 
 
Specific responsibilities of a Policy Intern include: responding to constituents via email or phone when applicable, conducting policy research, analyzing City and State laws, policies, and programs; developing and drafting policy recommendations; tracking and responding to agenda priorities; meeting with advocacy organizations, government agencies, and officials, and stakeholders on a variety of issues, watching or being present at legislative sessions and budget briefings, learning how to navigate the Legislative Retrieval System (LRS); and writing policy briefings and reports for the office. We also expect to include the Policy Intern in staff meetings so that they can gain an understanding of how their work with our Albany office directly affects our district.
 
Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Self-motivated, determined, and able to work independently, as well as collaboratively. Excel in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Strong problem-solving skills. Must have access to a computer and be able to check in via video chat once a week. This internship will be conducted in person at our Legislative Office located at the New York State Capital in Albany.
 
Start date-End Date: January 2, 2023 (with a flexible start date) - July 7, 2023
Hours:  10-20 hours per week
Compensation: Unpaid; will complete paperwork necessary for a student to receive available college credit(s) or outside grants.
