Research Associate - SFRD

Overview
The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is an independent, non-profit, federally-funded research and development center that provides objective analyses to the Department of Defense and other federal government agencies.The Strategy, Forces and Resources Division (SFRD) performs interdisciplinary analyses of plans and policies related to national security strategy; the structure and capabilities of US, allied and adversary forces; chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense; organizational efficiency and management issues; and human capital challenges. Researchers within SFRD provide technical, scientific, and analytical expertise in support of IDA’s work requiring independent and objective research, test, study and analyses of national security issues and related national challenges, particularly those requiring extraordinary scientific and technical expertise. This role additionally supports IDA’s role as a trusted and decisive contributor to U.S. security and science and technology debates. Under direct supervision, this position provides qualitative and quantitative research support, assisting and supporting work activities of more experienced research staff and other professional staff. 
 
Responsibilities
  • Directly contribute to IDA research efforts as members of research teams led by IDA Research Staff Members.
  • Maintains project files and databases; develops and maintains information sources and contacts; conducts reviews and searches of printed literature and databases, including government databases.
  • Maintains bibliographic and statistical data; performs data cleaning and coding; summarizes and documents contract information, research findings, and other information.
  • Contributes to the writing of project reports or papers as required. Completes research and programming tasks; develops draft reports on research findings and preliminary analyses.
  • Prepares and maintains project documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to research and analysis projects, produce cogent written products, and communicate complex concepts simply and clearly in oral presentations.
  • Astute attention to detail
  • Computer programming capability, training in data collection, analysis, or project coordination skills is preferred. 
  • The ability and willingness to travel as needed.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain necessary security clearances.
