The Barnes Center at The Arch team is comprised of Counseling, Health Promotion, Healthcare, and Recreation. Our team approaches health and wellness holistically, encompassing mind, body, spirit and community. Our services and resources place student needs at the forefront.
Job Description
About Barnes Center at The Arch Health Promotion
The Barnes Center at The Arch, Health Promotion Peer Educators are students that provide health and wellness education to their peers through interactive programs and other outreach initiatives. Peer educators also act as role models and as liaisons to connect their peers to health and wellness resources on campus and in the community. Some of the signature programming that peer educators assist with are Health Hubs and Wellness Leadership Institute.
Ultimately, Peer Education is a job that builds accountability and responsibility in students who are able to channel their passion for well-being and making a difference on our college campus through programming and education. Peer Educators are held to the same expectations as any other student employee but achieve great benefits along the way. This is a great opportunity to learn and grow skills that will not only help students professionally in their careers, but personally as well.
There are 3 distinct priority area wellness topics that peer education teams focus their efforts on:
· Alcohol & Other Substances (BeWise): Focus on educating and empowering students to make informed choices and decisions regarding the use of alcohol and other substances.
· Sexual Health & Healthy Relationships (PEEHRS): Focus on consent, healthy relationships, pro-social bystander intervention and rape culture.
· Mental Health & Wellness (SAMHE): Focus on mental and emotional health education, mindfulness, self-care, and increasing access to wellness resources.
Time Commitment
-The minimum time commitment to be involved with the group is 7 to 10 hours per week which includes a weekly meeting, office hour(s), and programming commitments.
- Hours typically fall within the weekday, but some weekend and evening hours are not unusual.
-This is an academic calendar year position.
Job Qualifications
GPA Requirement
- Academic excellence and self-care is a value of the peer education program. All peer educators must have and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5
Personal Qualifications
- Peer educators are highly reliable students that are passionate about promoting well-being, have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and strong interpersonal/communication skills. Peer educators are accountable and are able to work well independently and within team settings.
Mandatory Trainings
- All peer educators must complete mandatory trainings that will occur in April/May 2023 and August 2023 before classes begin. All peer educators will receive Certified Peer Educator training in addition to content and resource specific training.
