Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Intern

Note: This position is a temporary, limited term assignment.  

 The Diversity Equity and Inclusion department at TRS serves as trusted advisors and confidants to TRS staff to help ensure a safe and inclusive work environment. The Diversity Equity and Inclusion Intern will have an opportunity to support initiatives across the agency, including Benefit Services, Investment Management, Health Insurance Benefits, and Finance, with a primary focus on gaining practical work experience and business skills for personal development or to satisfy educational requirements. The Intern will work closely with senior level staff on a variety of projects related to their field of study and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
 
Benefits of a TRS Diversity Equity and Inclusion Internship: This position offers interns the opportunity to gain substantive experience within diversity, diversity, and inclusion in a well-respected state agency, the ability to work with diverse departments and help initiate strategies to better serve our members who serve the state of Texas. Interns will get training and mentoring from experienced professionals in one or more of these areas.
 
This position works under close supervision with limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment and reports to the director of the assigned department. 
 
Salary will be dependent on education level:
·    $17.00/hour within 12 months of graduation from a Bachelors' program.
·    $19.00/hour currently enrolled in a graduate program.


WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Program 
• Work closely with DE&I team to identify organizations and schools with which to establish a connection/collaboration for DE&I related recruitment goals.
• Update master list of (professional) organizations
• Update student clubs/organizations list
• Update list of schools and rationale to target
• Develop activity and communication plans with tracking for each group
• Support diverse talent pipeline development plan for identified TRS business units
• Focus on execution of communication and engagement activities and tracking
• Support DE&I Director in executing on other elements of plan
• Support DE&I Affinity Relations Specialist in developing and establishing relationships with identified organizations to share just in time opportunities as well as host professional development activities.
• Assist in the promotion of TRS opportunities
• Seek cross-promotional opportunities with school partners around alumni awareness and engagement.
• Maintain internal TRS DE&I Office communications.
• Monthly emails in collaboration with OE-OCM/L&D teams. Emails highlight Lunch and Learns, trainings, ERG and DEI Council events and activities, and other DE&I related strategic objectives.
• Update regularly the DE&I intranet site. The site highlights DE&I activities as well as articles of interest, book clubs, video projects, TRS DE&I and related community activities on the DE&I calendar.
• Identify and include other departments and groups for collaboration on executing activity and communication plans.
• Develop in collaboration with OE, a sourcing and communication plan designed to generate a diverse applicant pool for positions at all levels of the organization.
• Focus primarily on social media
• Create resource list for posting, sharing, promoting opportunities to target populations and networks.

General Support 
• Supports the DE&I Director in the execution of the DE&I strategic plan related to diversity recruitment.
• Identifies and includes other departments for collaboration on executing activity and communication plans.
• Develops, in collaboration with Organizational Excellence department, a sourcing and communication plan designed to generate a diverse applicant pool for positions at all levels of the organization.
• Focuses primarily on digital and social media.
• Creates resource list for posting, sharing, promoting opportunities to target populations and networks.
Performs related work as assigned

WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
Minimum Education:
• Classification will depend on qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in and actively attending an accredited college or university as an undergraduate student 
• Enrolled as a graduate student (Master or Doctoral)
• Applicant will be required to submit a copy of official college transcripts.  
Minimum Experience:
•  None. 
Registration, Certification, or Licensure:
• None.
Preferred Qualifications
• Strong writing skills. Writing samples attached to the online application are strongly encouraged.
• Strong knowledge in social media.
• Strong interest in diversity, equity and inclusion
• Strong research and analytical skills with ability to secure data and make recommendations.
• Must be motivated, organized and possess strong communication skills.
• Experience using Microsoft Office software.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
• General office practices and procedures.
• Concepts and practices of proofing, editing, and preparing informational materials. 
Skill in:
• Organizing and prioritizing work to manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced environment and completing work accurately while meeting deadlines.
• Conducting data searches and evaluations of large amounts of information, performing complex analysis of the data, and preparing concise and accurate reports and written/oral recommendations.
• Verbal and written communication of complex information that is accurate, timely, and based on sound judgment.
• Providing quality customer service.
• Reviewing documentation; properly applying complex laws, regulations, rules, and policies; and making decisions based on sound judgment.
• Using a personal computer in a Windows and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) environment, and accurately performing data entry.

• Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers, agency staff, and other external contacts.
• Work effectively in a professional team environment.
