Police Chief - Kinston, NC
The City of Kinston, North Carolina (2020 population 19,900), is located 75 miles east of Raleigh, the State Capitol, and 60 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean. Kinston is the largest municipality in Lenoir County and serves as the County seat. The City is centrally located to several growing communities including New Bern, Jacksonville, Goldsboro, and Greenville, all less than an hour away.
The Police Chief is responsible for coordinating activities of the City's police operations setting policies and goals under the direction of the City Manager. The desired candidate will have the ability to quickly build confidence, trust, and respect within the department and the community by exhibiting a willingness to hold themselves and others accountable, being firm but fair, possessing the courage to make tough decisions, and exhibiting a strong ability to collaborate and cooperate with internal and external stakeholders.
The salary range for this position is $95,285 - $132,762, with an anticipated starting salary in the midrange. The City offers a full range of employee benefits including health and dental insurance, retirement (401(k) and 457 deferred compensation), paid holidays, vacation and sick leave and longevity rewards. Residency is required within six months of hire. Relocation reimbursement is negotiable.
The position requires a bachelor's degree with coursework in law enforcement administration or related field and extensive experience of a wide and progressively responsible nature in police, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a community of similar size to Kinston. Minimum seven years’ experience preferred. Qualified candidates will possess or be able to obtain a North Carolina drivers’ license. NC Criminal and Justice Standards require a F-3 form and psychological evaluation to be completed upon hire.
