General Summary
This position is responsible for executing scientific experiments as directed by senior staff. The Scientist 1 in the Scientific Platforms Division will perform as a member of a scientific team engaged in drug discovery.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Executes high throughput in vitro biochemical and cell-based assays to support new and ongoing drug discovery projects as directed and under supervision of senior staff.
- Provides research and technical support to multiple drug discovery projects.
- Manages potential project risk and ensures that any unforeseen circumstance that may affect the quality or integrity of the study is noted and corrective action is taken and documented.
- Participates in manuscript preparation.
- Maintains knowledge of scientific discipline through familiarity with current scientific literature.
- Observes appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding, and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), study protocols, and institutional safety standards.
- Performs experiments under supervision as directed.
- Develops resolutions to technical problems.
- Performs specific techniques to test biological and biochemical activity of compounds and correctly utilize experimental apparatus and equipment specific to department/laboratory.
- Collects, analyzes and reviews data using ActivityBase, spreadsheets and statistical analysis software.
- Consistently produces reproducible high-quality scientific data.
- Performs all work tasks following laboratory safety requirements.
- Attends technical staff, departmental, and divisional meetings.
- Observes appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding, and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and study protocols.
- Performs other duties as required by supervisor.
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
- BS in Biology, Biochemistry or related discipline with 2+ years of laboratory experience in the design and execution of biochemical and cell-based assays.
- Experience using biochemical techniques to develop and execute cell-based and biochemical assays
- Demonstrated understanding of scientific research and methods
- Proven ability to work as a member of a team
- Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office Suite Products
- Has a complete understanding of laboratory safety and following experimental protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using integrated automated laboratory platforms to conduct high throughput screening
- Experience growing and using cell cultures for cell-based assays
- Experience working in a drug discovery environment
- Experience using ActivityBase for data capture and analysis
Work Environment and Conditions
This position will work in both an office and laboratory setting, including a Biosafety Level 3 facility. Use of a computer for extended periods of time may be necessary. Requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including (but not limited to):
- Eye protection (Safety glasses and/or full face shield)
- Respirator (varies based on tasks and barrier requirements)
- Tyvek/scrub suits
- Nitrile (or equivalent) gloves (varies based on tasks)
- Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)
Immunizations are required for this position and are determined by the study/agent. Some examples include Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Smallpox, Polio, and Influenza.
Physical Demands
- Ability to perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs in performing the work
- Ability to walk for reasonable distances in performing the work
- Ability to lift / carry objects weighing up to 20 lbs. in performing the work
- Ability to pull or push objects weighing up to 20 lbs. in performing the work
