The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a temporary Clinical Research Coordinator responsible for performing duties related to the Veteran community. The PHASER Coordinator will support the PHASER Pharmacogenomics (PGX) clinical program of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS).

The PGX test looks at genes to learn how an individual may respond to drugs. The PGX results will help the provider decide the best medication for the patient. Using the PGX test may help reduce the trial-and-error process of trying different drugs in varying doses. It may also reduce the chance the prescription will not work for the patient or may cause side effects.
This is a temporary, full time (40 hrs/wk), non-exempt position. There is some work from home flexibility but on-site work is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage all the daily activities of the PHASER clinical program;
  • Ensure all activities follow established guidelines/SOPs/protocol;
  • Ensure biospecimen collection or processing, shipment and handling;
  • Serve as a liaison between the Clinical Champions and providers, pharmacists, National Phaser Coordinating Center, Sanford and local laboratories;
  • Manage the PGX results in collaboration with H.I.M.;
  • Maintain databases for tracking providers and patients for follow up re: clinically actionable results;
  • Educate the Veterans and providers re: the clinical program;
  • Explain and obtain the informed consent to the Veterans;
  • Participate in conference calls with VA Durham CC regarding program evaluation and innovation;
  • Prepare project manuscripts and reports as required by VA Durham CC, VAPAHCS PGX Steering committee;
  • Assist in writing abstracts, protocols for any approved sub-pilot(s) of the program, operational manual for PGX implementation;
  • Perform literature reviews, and present scientific findings at meetings;
  • Travel to VA clinics for Veteran and provider informational outreach;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience);
  • Valid Driver's License;
  • At least 2 years of research-related experience, including experience working with patients in a hospital or research setting, handling biospecimens, and/or reporting adverse events.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences or related field;
  • Valid Driver's License;
  • P.H./M.D./Ph.D. in Health Sciences;
  • Phlebotomy certification;
  • 3+ years of experience working with outpatient or inpatient patients in a hospital setting obtaining vitals, handling biospecimens and/or reporting adverse events;
  • Previous experience with subject recruitment in a hospital setting;
  • Previous experience conducting clinical research or clinical project;
  • Ability to read and understand SOPs/protocol and ensure compliance;
  • Working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures of clinical implementation project;
  • Ability to understand and follow VA procedures and safety issues in the conduct of clinical implementation project;
  • Strong ability to problem-solve barriers encountered during any phase of PGX implementation;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Good computer skills;
  • Strong knowledge of database management;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and coordinate and follow through on multiple tasks;
  • Good interpersonal skills because this clinical project entails substantial interactions with clinical lab, pharmacy, H.I.M. team (CPRS) and informatics teams (CACs, LIMs);
  • Ability to work with collaborators to further improve implementation processes;
  • Ability to present project milestones and metrics in conferences and meetings.
