THE POSITION
This is a responsible professional internship assisting in developing and implementing fire protection engineering programs and services.

The principal function of an employee in this class involves plan review and new construction inspection and providing technical expertise and consultation on a wide variety of fire protection engineering issues. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Fire Protection Engineer. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees in the City Engineering and Community Development Departments, other city employees, business and community organizations and the public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment with some visits to project sites.

NOTE: This is a 12 week internship May - August 2023. Housing assistance may be a possibility with this position.

Tentative Recruitment Process Timeline: Review of applications will begin at the end of October 2022 with interviews to occur in November 2022.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Graduation from high school and attending, or recently graduated (within 12 months) from, an accredited college or university working toward a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or closely related academic field with a GPA of 2.5 or better.
  • Experience in professional fire protection engineering work or a closely related field preferred but not required.
  • Pay is based on degree in progress or recently conferred as well as the degree program.
  • Seeking a bachelor's degree in a related field - $18/hour.
  • Seeking a bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or recently graduated (within the past 12 months) with a bachelor's degree in a related field - $21/hour.
  • Seeking a master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering  or recently graduated (within the past 12 months) with a bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering - $23/hour.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
  • Reviews, evaluates, and assists in the approval of building plans and specifications; plans for sprinkler systems; fire alarm systems; standpipe systems; special hazard protection systems; and water supply installations from a fire protection engineering perspective. Review petitions for variances and assist in developing the Department's position on such requests.
  • Provides fire protection engineering expertise and consultation to other Sections of the Fire Department. Assists with planning and researching future needs of the Fire Department. Provides on-scene technical support at emergency incidents. Provides information on property fire protection features, equipment or devices and on structural conditions or hazards to the incident commander. Provide specialized fire protection engineering consultation to other City departments, architects, engineers, property owners, contractors, etc., as appropriate.
  • Assists in the coordination of developing and revising of related fire codes and ordinances for protection of life, property and preservation of the environment. Works with state and local officials in the code development process, as appropriate.
  • Apply knowledge of current technological advances related to fire protection engineering. Performs specialized research applicable to fire protection issues. Assists in the development of policies and procedures relating to fire prevention, fire protection, and fire inspection practices. Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
