Nuclear Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION 

The Fleet Reactor Engineering department is seeking entry level nuclear engineers to fill several different roles within the organization. Possible opportunities include:
  1. Nuclear design and analysis support for LOS ANGELES and VIRGINIA-class submarines. (Niskayuna, NY)
  2. Nuclear design and analysis support for OHIO-class submarines. (Niskayuna, NY)
  3. Criticality safety design and analysis supporting fuel handling, storage and transportation (Pittsburgh, PA and Niskayuna, NY)
  4. Nuclear design and analysis support for SEAWOLF and NIMITZ-class air craft carriers. (Pittsburgh, PA)

Engineers in these positions would be expected to perform engineering evaluations and analyses, and make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks. Cognizant areas may include planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, and documentation of nuclear design or criticality safety evaluations of reactor components and systems. Work may include design reviews, operations support, safety analysis, engineering methods and software development.

REQUIRED SKILLS *
Advanced:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience; or
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
  • Currently or previously NPE qualified or CTE/ACRS and one year of EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program; or
  • Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and one year as SRE
 
Senior:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience; or
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience; or
  • Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part I qualified or EDO and two years as EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program; or
  • Three years as SRE plus Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and Fuel and Barrier Shift Supervisor (ECF only), or SRE qualified and six years of experience

PREFERRED SKILLS
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Nuclear Engineering or Physics
  • Effective oral and written communication skills along with good teaming skills
  • Experience with software programming such as Java and/or Python
  • Nuclear engineering experience, technical internship and/or co-op experience
  • Professional or academic experience with criticality safety and/or nuclear design and analysis 
  • Strong communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Navy experience
  • Ability to work on an individual assignment(s) as well as being a member of a small team(s)
  • Willingness to be trained and learn new skills as needed
