DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Para-Educator, Serving Students with Mild/Moderate Needs
Para-Educators work with students with learning, communication, behavioral or emotional disabilities. The majority of students served are in need of academic assistance.

Para Educator Serving Students with Significant Needs
Para-Educators – SH Program work in the special education programs serving students with severe disabilities. The emphasis of the learning program is to teach critical life skills that the students will need to get along at home and in the community such as feeding, toileting, and grooming. Academics is not necessarily the priority for these students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; any combination of training and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described, including previous experience working with groups of children; previous experience working with children or adults with disabilities highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to pass a written exam demonstrating knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing, and mathematics, pursuant to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001; read and understand instructions, teaching manuals and/or guides; communicate effectively in both oral and written forms with diverse populations; successfully supervise students; follow instructions with a minimum of direction; follow and give clear directions; work independently and make decisions within the framework of established guidelines; work in a team environment; adapt to individual needs of teachers and students and work with interruptions; adapt to changing conditions as needs dictate; respond quickly to emergency situations; work with students and staff; understand and maintain confidentiality; perform general clerical duties including record keeping and filing; accept, understand, and relate to students who have behavioral, learning, or physical disabilities; willingness to be trained and updated in first aid and CPR, safety/security and behavior management procedures; willingness to be trained in the use of various equipment as needed.
