Metallic Materials Engineer Intern

Chemours is seeking a Metallurgy/Corrosion Intern to join our Materials Engineering team! This position will report directly to the Leveraged Engineering Manager.
As a Metallurgy/Corrosion Intern, you will work closely with the Materials Engineering team gaining valuable experience through hands-on projects at the Chemours Discovery Hub. You will have exposure to real-time engineering work alongside other engineers to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom.
The primary responsibility of this role is to conduct and assist in failure analysis investigations as well as corrosion studies in support of Chemours manufacturing and R&D operations. The student may also have the opportunity to interact with vendors of equipment, such as fabrication shops and sub-assembly suppliers. The student will work closely with, and receive guidance from, corporate materials engineering consultants and laboratory support technicians during this work assignment. Possible materials that may be worked with include, but are not limited to, carbon steel, stainless steel (austenitic, duplex, precipitation hardened), iron-nickel alloys, nickel-based alloys, and some reactive metals. Components to be analyzed will include equipment typical for a Chemical Processing Plant: pressure vessels, heat exchangers, agitators, pumps, shafts, pipes, valves, etc.
Effective engineering co-ops will have the ability to communicate with impact, have strong self-awareness, and will be naturally inquisitive.
Location: Newark, DE
Hours: Regular full-time schedule of 40 hours per week
Term: May – August 2023 (Dates are Flexible)
Candidates must be able to commit to at least a total of three (3) months as an intern.
The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Initiating and completing a thorough materials study to include corrosion, mechanical, and metallographic testing. This study will have a direct impact on the Chemours Businesses
  • Investigating failed components, metallographic preparation and interpretation, analyzing data and problem solving using a scientific approach
  • Creating and presenting technical summaries to the engineering department internal customers and peers
  • Prioritizing tasks and managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Goals for the roll include: understanding of laboratory operations and basic corrosion testing, increased knowledge of failure analysis and corrosion mechanisms, increased knowledge of multiple metallic alloy service applications and potential failure modes, as well as general exposure to the chemical process industry
The following is required for this role:

  • Enrollment at an accredited college or university as a rising Junior or above at time of assignment
  • Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Metallurgical, Materials with an emphasis in Metallurgy, or Corrosion Engineering
  • Completed minimum of 1 class or project (or similar) related to corrosion engineering
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and computer skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Organized and self-motivated
The following is preferred for this role:

  • Experience in a manufacturing and/or laboratory environment.
  • Completed courses in: Ferrous Metallurgy, Physical Metallurgy, Failure Analysis, Material Science or Metallurgy lab courses, Manufacturing related coursework
  • Experience or completed coursework related to welding metallurgy, techniques, and processes
  • Experience or complete course work in non-ferrous metallurgies
