Entry Level Materials Engineer

Associate/Intermediate:
The Fleet Material Applications & Metallography unit is seeking candidates familiar with the practical selection and application of structural materials. The successful applicant shall possess an understanding of the deformation and fracture of metals, as well as microstructural, microanalytical, and fractographic evaluations. Elements of the position will also include: supporting resolution of queries concerning selection, application, and performance of materials (both metallic and non-metallic) for new and existing power plant designs; performing failure analysis to assess component service performance; resolving continued use issues; reviewing design documents and vendor/shipyard submittals for materials issues; maintaining a structural materials knowledge manual; supporting materials manufacturing efforts (e.g. tube manufacturing).

Required Skills *

Associate:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university required.
 
Intermediate:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year of relevant experience

Preferred Skills

Degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering
Experience analyzing radiation effects on materials, with emphasis on polymers and nonmetallics
Experience with metallic materials manufacturing and associated requirements (e.g. microcleanliness)
Experience with carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, and non-metallic materials (e.g., polymers)
Effective oral and written communication skills, self-motivated, and willing to work with a wide range of professional disciplines, including materials scientists, mechanical engineers, statisticians, and design engineers.
