Summary:

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) regulates the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products. Our goal is to reduce the harm from all regulated tobacco products across the entire population, including: reducing the number of people who start to use tobacco products, encouraging more people to stop using these products, and reducing the adverse health impact for those who continue to use these products. CTP's actions have significant public health and consumer protection impact and are among the most important issues faced by the Agency in its long and distinguished history.  

This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Medical Products and Tobacco, Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), Office of Science (OS), Division of Product Services (DPS) located in Beltsville, Maryland.
 
Responsibilities/Job Duties:
 
  • Serves as a microbiology reviewer, reviewing a wide range of tobacco product applications to determine the adequacy of microbiology data and tests submitted by a manufacturer regarding the safety and public health impact of regulated products.
  • Keeps abreast of new findings through review of microbiology literature, participation in professional meetings, and undertaking independent research.
  • Provides verbal and written conclusions to other Federal agencies, industry, universities, and State, local, and foreign governments.
 
Qualifications:

 The position of Microbiologist falls under the 0403 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-9/11, you must meet all requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 08/19/2022.

Basic Requirements
Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. The specialized experience must demonstrate one year of full-time work experience , or the equivalent if part-time (for example, an employee working 20 hours per week for a 12-month period should be credited with 6 months of experience.) Experience may have been obtained in either the federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.

GS-09: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07, in the Federal service, which includes: performing analyses of microbiological data, manufacturing processes and test methods; compiling data to prepare presentations to support recommendations on scientific issues; assisting higher grade scientists with providing written scientific conclusions to other Federal agencies, industry, universities, State, local, or foreign governments.

OR

Successfully completed 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree


OR

A combination of education and appropriate experience that, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement.

GS-11: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09, in the Federal service, which includes: reviewing and evaluating microbiological data, manufacturing processes and test methods; reviewing study protocols and offer recommendations related to study design; compiling data to prepare presentations to support recommendations on scientific issues; providing verbal and written scientific conclusions to other Federal agencies, industry, universities, State, local, or foreign governments.

OR

Successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

OR

A combination of education and appropriate experience that, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement.
