How can you find your own unique path to healthcare? Do you need a medical degree to have an impact on the health and lives of patients? And how do you stay focused on your passions while being open to the opportunities you didn’t even know were possible?
Dr. John Riggins Jr. ‘12 knew that he wanted to be a physician since he was 10 years old. But even with that certainty, his journey to medicine was full of twists and turns. In addition to practicing as an emergency medicine physician, John translated his passion for education and addressing health inequities into a career in healthcare administration and will soon begin serving as one of the assistant medical directors for the NYP-Columbia Emergency Department.
Whether you’re seeking practical advice about various careers in healthcare; you have a commitment to health more broadly and are open to where you might apply it; you want to hear more about how your passion for health equity can inform your future work; or are interested in learning how to navigate your academic interests towards potential next steps—you’ll find John to be a knowledgeable and supportive resource.
Dr. John Riggins Jr. ‘12 is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and a Masters of Healthcare Administration candidate at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. At Amherst, John majored in Black Studies and worked as an AmeriCorps member with City Year New York before receiving his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and his training in emergency medicine at SUNY Downstate and Kings County Hospitals.
