Project Planning GIS Intern (NPS) – Yosemite National Park

Overview

This internship is an opportunity to make project information sharing and planning at Yosemite more effective with GIS! This position will work within the Compliance Branch at Yosemite National Park, in coordination with the park’s enterprise Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program, to develop a Project Tracking Dashboard in ArcGIS Online and provide GIS training and technical support for the Compliance Branch.

Responsibilities

The principal project of this internship will be to work with the park’s project planning and compliance specialists to develop an internal geospatial Project Tracking Dashboard in ArcGIS Online to track current and planned projects across the park landscape. The intern will receive on-the-job training on compliance requirements and existing project scoping and review processes in order to design the dashboard effectively and create documentation with the dashboard for users and administrators. The intern will also provide tailored GIS training and technical support for the Compliance Branch and help streamline their use of GIS and access to geographic information. Other possible tasks include creating maps, designing and managing geospatial data, and responding to GIS requests. The GIS Intern can expect to deploy a variety of technical skills to identify decision points and solve issues that arise along the way.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to applicants who are currently pursuing or have obtained a GIS degree/certificate and who have the following qualifications:
  • Prior work experience using GIS
  • Experience using the current suite of ESRI ArcGIS software and extensions and ArcGIS Online
  • Solid ArcGIS Pro skills, particularly map layouts
  • Ability to develop and analyze spatial information with GIS
  • Knowledge of cartographic and geodatabase design principles
The position requires the ability to take initiative, communicate effectively, and work both independently and in collaboration with others. Experience and skill in Python may be considered but is not required. Most of the work will occur in the office. Shared housing will be available about a mile from the office and 45 minutes from the nearest town.
