Facilities GIS Intern (NPS) – Yosemite National Park

Overview

This position will work within the Design and Engineering (D&E) Branch at Yosemite National Park, in coordination with the park’s enterprise Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program, to continue to develop and improve facilities GIS data such as utilities, survey monuments, trees, buildings, roads, and trails. 

Responsibilities

The Yosemite D&E Branch is working with the park’s Enterprise GIS program toward the goal of having comprehensive, accurate parkwide Facilities GIS data available for use within the park and beyond. The Facilities GIS Intern will support this endeavor through continued development and implementation of procedures to populate, quality check, and maintain accurate Facilities GIS data. This will inform the creation of web maps, static maps, and mobile GIS applications for use by park staff responsible for maintaining buildings, utilities, roads, and other park infrastructure. The intern will be responsible for mobile data collection set-up and support as well as maintenance and troubleshooting of data collection equipment and applications. The GIS Intern can expect to deploy a variety of technical skills and communication tools to identify decision points and solve issues that arise along the way.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to applicants who are currently pursuing or have obtained a GIS degree/certificate and who have the following qualifications:
  • Prior work experience using GIS
  • Experience using the current suite of ESRI ArcGIS software and extensions
  • Experience with managing mobile data collection
  • Ability to develop and analyze spatial information with GIS
  • Understanding of geodatabase design principles
  • Practical knowledge of geographic projection datums and geospatial data
  • Familiarity with GIS modernization
Experience and skill in AutoCAD and/or Python are also desirable but not required. The position requires the ability to take initiative, communicate effectively, and work both independently and in collaboration with others. Most of the work will occur in the office with occasional field work. Shared housing will be available for rent about a mile from the office and 45 minutes from the nearest town.
