NPS GIS Internship at Capitol Reef National Park

Overview

The goal of this internship is to help Capitol Reef National Park (CARE) develop and implement improved spatial data management practices and to develop tablet data collection forms in ArcGIS Survey123 to facilitate natural and cultural resources field work. The intern will work with CARE and NPS Geographic Resources Division (GRD) staff and build on work by 2020 CARE GIS intern Justin Culman who initiated GIS data vetting and migration into standardized NPS file and folder structures.

Responsibilities

  1. Review legacy resource datasets for source accuracy and complete metadata as necessary.

  1. Standardize datasets using NPS geodatabase templates and migrate data into updated GIS folder structures, including providing guidance for continued maintenance and best practices.

  1. Develop tablet data collection forms in ArcGIS Survey123 for upcoming natural and cultural resource field projects.

  1. Document work completed, including workflows and metadata, communicate with CARE staff, and recommend next steps.

Qualifications

A successful candidate will have a strong foundation in GIS, be familiar with basic spatial data standards and data management practices, and be competent with feature classes in a geodatabase. The candidate should be proficient using ESRI ArcGIS software, especially ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. Experience working with ArcGIS Survey123 and Collector/Field Maps is preferred but not required. Candidates should be comfortable working independently and contacting outside specialists as needed. Although most of the work (approximately 80-90%) will be conducted in a climate-controlled office, occasional field work for program support activities will take place in rugged, exposed, desert backcountry locations. Candidates should be comfortable living in a remote, rural, desert environment. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident between the ages of 18 and 35 years old. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.
