Position Description
OBCDC will be hiring 4-8 Canvassers
Old Brooklyn is Cleveland’s accessible, family-friendly neighborhood where business and people come to grow. It is home to regional assets such as the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, hundreds of small businesses, and over 30,000 people. Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation (OBCDC) is dedicated to growing Old Brooklyn through empowered partnerships, leadership, programming, and advocacy.
Program Background: The Neighbor to Neighbor Cleveland Program (N2N) – a Cleveland community engagement and data collection project - is designed to build community engagement and organizing capacity across Cleveland neighborhoods, as well as create a platform for collecting community-level data on the digital divide and tax foreclosures across the city. The data is expected to guide interventions to achieve digital equity for Cleveland and for the most impacted Cleveland residents.
What is the digital divide? The digital divide refers to the gap between people who have access to modern information and communications technology (such as internet) and those who do not due to various factors, including socioeconomic status.
N2N Cleveland Program Neighborhood Canvassers: OBCDC will be hiring 4-8 canvassers to work in the Old Brooklyn neighborhood. The ideal candidate is friendly, outgoing, has a service leadership mentality, and is passionate about Cleveland neighborhoods and residents. Neighborhood Canvassers will collect local community-level data on the digital divide and housing instability across the Old Brooklyn neighborhood. Canvassers will educate residents on programs they may be eligible for and ask questions to understand the gaps that exist due to lack of resources.
Main roles and responsibilities include:
- Effectively engage residents primarily through door-to-door canvassing conversations and at community events and local businesses, like grocery stores.
- Building trust and developing relationships with community residents around digital access, literacy and other quality of life issues.
- Work with the other Old Brooklyn canvassers and the Community Engagement Specialist to ensure that goals are being met and complete regular progress reports, adjusting tactics as needed.
- Represent the Neighbor to Neighbor program with professionalism and ethical conduct in order to build a positive relationship with the community at large.
- Connecting residents with resources available through the City of Cleveland, local nonprofits, and organizations.
- Attend regular check-ins with Community Engagement Specialist and staff as appropriate.
- Familiarity with services located in Old Brooklyn and provided by OBCDC.
- Assumes additional responsibilities and performs special projects as needed or directed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format.
- Interpersonal skills- i.e. is friendly, approachable and enjoys interacting with people from a wide range of communities and cultures.
- Previous canvass experience is helpful, but not required as training and coaching will be provided to all canvassers.
- Comfortable with data collection, management and reporting as well as software and technology (such as personal computers, handheld devices, Microsoft Office Suites).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cohort/collaborative team.
- Proficiency in Spanish is preferred.
- Minimum age requirement is 18 years old.
Essential Functions
- This position requires movement on streets, sidewalks, and driveways as well as physical motion to ascend and descend stairs of neighborhood houses.
- This position requires the ability to move throughout the neighborhood to conduct surveys.
- This position requires vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Compensation
- Canvassers will be paid an hourly rate of $15 per hour.
- Canvassers will be considered contractual employees and will be required to keep their own timesheets.

This is a part time position which will end once program goals are complete. This will likely include evenings and weekends. This position has flexible scheduling between 15-30 hours a week canvassing throughout the Old Brooklyn neighborhood and will be based out of the OBCDC office.
