Are you looking for an opportunity to advance your knowledge and clinical skills? Barnes-Jewish Hospital is seeking motivated and enthusiastic senior baccalaureate nursing
students for our Nurse Externship Program.
 
The Barnes-Jewish Hospital Nurse Externship Program is a 3-week paid program that fosters the development of your clinical nursing skills and enhances your future success.
 
The program provides an exceptional learning environment that immerses nurse externs into the real-life role of the professional acute nurse. Barnes-Jewish holds the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet® designation, which recognizes exemplary patient care and innovative nursing practice. Our Magnet hospital provides an extraordinary practice environment affording many learning opportunities and experiences. Our externs
will be paired with a dedicated nurse preceptor.
 
Under the direct supervision and guidance of the preceptors, the externs will participate and assist in direct patient care activities and will learn clinical reasoning skills essential to the provision of safe, quality patient care.
 
Program Goals:
  • Provide learning opportunities that enhance
  • clinical competence through the development of priority setting, clinical decision-making, delegation and time management skills
  • Enhance the understanding of the multidimensional roles of the registered professional nurse; helping to bridge the education-practice gap that often occurs during the transition from the student role into the role of the registered professional nurse
  • Role modeling and exposure to the exceptional practice environment of a Magnet designated hospital
  • Educational opportunities offered by clinical educators, clinical nurse specialists and subject matter experts
  • Provision of networking, mentorship and potential job opportunities upon graduation
 
Program Dates and Information:
Application Due Date: November 25, 2022
Start Date: December 19, 2022
End Date: January 7, 2023
 
The Nurse Extern will commit to a full-time schedule for 3 weeks. Hours vary and may include day and night shifts, weekends and holidays during the Externship.
 
Housing, parking, and scrubs will be provided by Barnes-Jewish during the Externship.
 
Eligibility for Applying:
Full-time enrollment in an accredited baccalaureate nursing program with anticipated graduation in May, August, or December 2023 with a BSN degree.
 
Submission of a completed application packet by November 25, 2022. This packet includes:
  • The application form for the Nurse Externship Program
  • Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a clinical faculty member
  • An essay focusing on why you wish to attend the Nurse Externship Program (no longer than two single-spaced pages)
  • Proof of a valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS card
  • Clinical Skills Attestation
  • Clinical Skills Self-Assessment
  • Media release form

Preferred Qualifications

Role Purpose
Provides multi-skilled, direct patient care, under the direction and supervision of a registered professional nurse.
Responsibilities
  • Assists nurse with patient and family education. Documents all patient care activities provided.
  • Ensures availability of supplies and equipment to meet each patient's needs.
  • Implements direct patient care under the supervision of the nursing team.
  • Collects clinical data and information on patients, and documents appropriately.
  • Instructs patients in preparations for tests and procedures.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
  • Performs Other Responsibilities as Assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Enrolled in accredited RN program
Preferred Requirements
  • Enrolled in accredited BSN program
