Research Intern

National Journal’s Vignette team is hiring an Intern to join our team of experts producing insight and intelligence on how Washington works.

What is National Journal’s Vignette? 
Vignette serves as an unparalleled repository of knowledge and insight on the people shaping policy discussions and political discourse, including members of Congress and the current administration. Our team produces and maintains a rich and expansive database of profiles, conducting in-depth research on policymakers in Washington and beyond. In addition to expanding our digital library with new profiles, the team closely monitors events to ensure the database remains up-to-date. Vignette’s insights are showcased in multiple ways, incorporated into newsletters, customized briefing materials, and other intelligence leveraged by senior public policy practitioners and government affairs executives.

You are the ideal Vignette Intern if:
  • You are highly interested in American politics—how it works, policy and legislation, and the people in charge—and eager to learn more 
  • You have a strong eye for detail
  • You are a skilled writer, able to convey facts and ideas with concision and accuracy 
  • You are a team player, willing to help out with a variety of tasks and switch gears quickly if necessary

In this role, the Vignette Intern:
  • Learns how to research, write, and update Vignette profiles
  • Carefully copyedits Vignette profiles before they are uploaded to the website
  • Ensures that Vignette profiles are properly uploaded to the website
  • Assists with database/website management as necessary

Qualifications of the ideal candidate:
  • An excellent academic record; ideally at least a college junior 
  • Demonstrated interest in public policy and politics 
  • Significant writing experience, either through coursework, previous internship experience, or extracurricular activities such as a college newspaper 
  • Experience conducting qualitative or internet-based research
  • Previous editing experience preferred but not required 
  • A full course of the COVID-19 vaccination is required for employment at National Journal
  • Active contributor to a diverse and inclusive workplace

Employment Type: Internship (up to 40 hours per week, but can be flexible)
Compensation: The salary for this role is $17/per hour
Location: Remote or in Washington, D.C. (hybrid schedule)
