What You Will Do
Put your engineering talents to good use by joining our world-class R&D team! Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an exceptional R&D Engineers to join our Weapons Production directorate. The Actinide Material Processing & Power (AMPP) Division in the Weapons Directorate provides complete, full life-cycle process development, prototyping and production engineering capabilities for all plutonium, uranium and other actinide material components in support of the United States national security and energy missions. This is your chance to make a real difference while working on important research directly impacting national security.
You will provide technical support as the process/system and assist in developing processes, improving processes, troubleshooting, and manufacturing support. You will be responsible for assisting operations as needed to maintain equipment and ensure the operability of manufacturing processes along with supporting the complete life cycle for various products manufactured to support the nation's needs for plutonium and SNM fabricated products. This role requires working in a glovebox or open hood operation and the ability/willingness to handle special nuclear materials. In this role, you will be interacting with multiple organizations to ensure compliance with Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Quality, and Safety Management programs. You will serve as a contributing member of the R&D and Operations teams to address engineering challenges. Specific tasks include design, build, prototyping, installation, and maintenance of equipment required for recovery, purification, and recycle of uranium, plutonium, and americium oxide. This includes hands on use of the equipment and working with other engineers, scientists, and technicians in the optimization of production throughput and quality requirements.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Engineering Experience: Experience performing a broad range of complex engineering, including experience designing a complete project, system, or component through work experience.
Manufacturing & Component Testing: Knowledge of manufacturing and component testing operations (e.g. mechanical testing, machining, and component assembly).
Project Development: Knowledge of and experience in design; planning; and executing research and development projects. Experience with continuous improvement concepts and tools.
Problem Solving Skills: Ability to recognize and define technical problems, measure variables, analyze the problem, implement and validate solutions, and control process.
Education/Experience
DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or related science, 2 years of job related experience and 1 year of nuclear experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.
- Knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
- Technical knowledge of programing languages for CNC machine tools.
- Knowledge and experience with one or more of the following software types: Design (SolidWorks or CREO-2.0); Finite Element (ANSYS or ABAQUS), and/or acquisition and analysis (LabVIEW and MATLAB).
- Active DOE "Q" Clearance
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
