Director, Social Innovation Lab

The Johns Hopkins Social Innovation Lab (SIL) accelerates leaders and ventures building innovative, sustainable, and scalable solutions in Baltimore that work towards a healthy and prosperous world. Our aim is to see mission-driven ventures from both the Johns Hopkins and Baltimore communities develop into thriving ventures with measurable impacts. 

Situated within Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures and reporting to the Director of Student Ventures, we are seeking a Director of the Social Innovation Lab who leads efforts in operating SIL, refining, implementing, and evaluating a strategy for the SIL, and ensuring integration of SIL into other innovation ventures at Johns Hopkins and in Baltimore. The Director focuses on creating environments that foster learning, innovation, inclusion, and impact. The Director also engages with Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures more broadly on questions of social entrepreneurship, mission-driven innovation, and civic engagement.

Since its founding, initially led by invested JHU student leaders in 2011, SIL has supported 113 ventures that have gone on to secure more than $82 million in funding and currently employ 280+ individuals in paid roles. Today, SIL’s core activity is its six-month social venture accelerator program, an annual, competitively selected cohort of Baltimore-area social entrepreneurs with early-stage organizations. By leveraging and increasing access to JHTV and JHU resources, SIL provides opportunities for its cohort to (1) establish and refine strategies for growth and sustainability, (2) set and meet critical milestones to move the venture forward, (3) connect and collaborate with other entrepreneurs. 

In 2016, SIL also launched our Impact Bootcamp program to support early stage innovators. The bootcamps are a one-day, intensive training for people looking to gain or enhance the skills essential for launching and leading a social venture. In partnership with local entrepreneurship support organizations, SIL’s bootcamps have provided approximately 600 students and community members with the skills, tools and connections to spark change in Baltimore and beyond.
In current and future programming and collaborative work, SIL fosters equitable access and opportunity for all, facilitating immersive learning for individuals and teams, acting as a catalyst and convener for networks championing support for social enterprise growth, and coordinating opportunities for funding, technical assistance, and access to space.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Strategic Development
The Director will be responsible for leading the long-term direction of SIL by: 
  • Working with and supporting broader initiatives to foster social entrepreneurship and innovation at JHU and in the greater Baltimore community
  • Leading discussions with appropriate stakeholders, including community leaders, university administrators, students, faculty, and staff
  • Promoting the SIL Board of Advisors’ engagement in critical thinking, strategic planning, resource/financial development, membership development and overall organizational wellness.
  • Developing enduring and creative partnerships with entities throughout Baltimore to further the efforts of SIL
  • Establishing or refining operational plans including policies, procedures, and processes for SIL (e.g., budgeting, financial planning, human resources, risk management, etc.)
  • Supporting inclusive annual strategic planning process and ensuring planning decisions are used in setting annual program/project goals
  • Implementing creative strategies to increase internal and external awareness of SIL's work and program value
  • Establishing and maintaining dialogue and shared learning between SIL at Johns Hopkins with regional and national bodies that promote entrepreneurship
  • Successfully navigating internal and external communities to guide and connect entrepreneurs with the resources they need to be successful
  • Developing and implementing strategies – in conjunction with JHTV and the Development & Alumni Relations office– to secure philanthropic support to support the program’s strategic priorities
  • Tracking, monitoring, and evaluating outputs, outcomes, and impact of SIL

The Director will also be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Social Innovation Lab. The Director will lead the programmatic operations of SIL by: 
  • Recruiting applicants and leading the selection process for the annual cohort
  • In coordination with the Director of Student Ventures, overseeing and managing the budget, ensuring appropriate allocation and expenditure of funds 
  • Recruiting, selecting, and supervising a team of mentors, fellows, and JHU student interns that support the annual cohort 
  • Planning, implementing, and evaluating all programming 
  • Identifying and holding regular meetings with the Board of Advisors, JHU faculty and staff, community stakeholders, etc. 
  • Serving as an expert to provide feedback, guidance, and advocacy for policies and practices that best support social entrepreneurship on campus and in the greater Baltimore community

  • As part of the FastForward startup ecosystem at JHTV, SIL is based out of the FastForward U office in Remington, on the edge of the JHU Homewood campus. Alongside other programming, SIL utilizes the co-working space, helps host events, and otherwise participates in furthering the startup support of FastForward
  • With the FastForward U team, SIL co-develops outreach to connect with and educate JHU student social entrepreneurs (speaker events, participation in Pre Orientation for incoming first year students, outreach to offices and faculty, etc)
  • In strategic consultation, SIL works to develop and cross-promote workshops and resources that are of interest to ventures engaging with both FFU and SIL programming

Scope of Responsibility
  • This position reports to the Director of Student Ventures
  • Knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures including familiarity of other departments within the school/division
  • Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department

Decision Making
  • On a regular and continuous basis, exercises administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area
  • This position is responsible for making decisions consistent with a variety of established procedures as well as creating and maintaining procedures and determining work priorities to meet deadlines

  • Directs the activities of the Social Innovation Lab and related functions

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field to this position's duties, is required
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a related field to this position's duties, is required
  • Additional education can be substituted for experience*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • U.S. Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency is required due to Federal Export Controls.
  • A high degree of enthusiasm, energy, and creativity for social entrepreneurship
  • Significant professional experience with a proven track record of leadership in a business or organization, along with an understanding and appreciation of business from both non-profit and for-profit perspectives
  • Experience mentoring young organizations and/or working with students and universities
  • Demonstrated ability to work with partners from multiple sectors, including public, private, not-for-profit, media, and education
  • The diplomatic and tactful nature required to build relationships quickly across cultures within the University and Baltimore, to work effectively with a wide range of people
  • Proven track record of leveraging resources and establishing strategic relationships to strengthen program and service delivery
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds (e.g., class, race, nationality, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, etc.) and to foster sensitivity to diversity and an inclusive campus and community culture
