This project will assist in the implementation of new technological features in the Kestrel Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code for application within the NASA Langley Configuration Aerodynamics Branch (CAB). CFD simulations will be executed on a regulation Major League Baseball geometry using fully unsteady CFD techniques. The project will focus upon the application of a free transition (laminar to turbulent) model and six degree of freedom simulation. Both of these models exist in Kestrel but have not been applied within CAB. The ultimate goal is to simulate a fastball and curveball using these new methods. Prior experience with CFD is desired but not required. Prior knowledge and experience with the sports of baseball or softball would be helpful.
