Forestry Technician (Fire Dispatch)

Summary

These positions are located in BLM Oregon State Office, in the North Western Division.

GS-06 Salary Range: $40,262 - $52,341
GS-07 Salary Range: $44,740 - $58,158

Duties

Gather information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents.Provide training to subordinate crew members in this process.Deploy personnel and equipment, utilizing best approaches and practices to protect values at risk.Serve as an incident commander on initial attack incidents.Make evaluation of fire situations, determines rate of spread, potential hazards to property and other improvements, and determine appropriate suppression method to use.Direct hose lays, deployment of crew, point of initial attack, type of tools to use and application of water.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

GS-06:Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following in a developmental capacity: (1) assisting in wildland fire prevention and preparedness activities; (2) participating in wildland fire suppression efforts to safely and effectively control wildland fires; (3) applying principles of wildland ecosystems, natural resources, and burn pattern management; and (4) participating in weather reviews, proficiency checks, and/or fire safety sessions.
OR
Education: Have successfully completed one full year of graduate level education which included courses directly related to the work of the position such as: such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. NOTE: You must submit transcripts for verification.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Have an equivalent combination of the specialized experience stated in A and education stated in B. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required in A. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for B. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: You must submit transcripts for verification.

GS-07:Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience, comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) preparing readiness trainings for wildland fire suppression equipment and/or personnel; (2) conducting wildfire suppression efforts in accordance with mandated management response; (3) assessing fire and fire suppression impacts on the ecosystem; and (4) participating in wildland fire and safety training for the efficient operation and use of tools, equipment, or vehicles.
OR
Education: Have successfully completed one full year of graduate level education which included courses directly related to the work of the position such as: such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. NOTE: You must submit transcripts for verification.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Have an equivalent combination of the specialized experience stated in A and education stated in B. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required in A. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for B. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: You must submit transcripts for verification.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This is an administrative position in an organization having a firefighting mission, and is in an established career path. Prior firefighting experience (minimum of 90 days), as gained by substantial service in a primary firefighter position or equivalent experience outside the Federal government is a MANDATORY PREREQUISITE for incumbents of this position. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
