Location: Nestled between the Painted Desert and ponderosa highlands of northern Arizona, Wupatki is a landscape of legacies. Ancient pueblos dot red-rock outcroppings across miles of prairie. Where food and water seem impossible to find, people built pueblos, raised families, farmed, traded, and thrived. Today, if you linger and listen, earth and artifacts whisper their stories to us still.
Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the park. Local candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Scheduling: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm (other 40 hour schedules are possible)
Position Description: ACE Member will survey monument lands for the presence of trace fossils (dinosaur trackways) and fossilized remains of ancient plants and animals. ACE Member will utilize GPS grids to assist in a systematic pedestrian survey. All fossil sites will be photographed and extensively described in field journals, field forms, and computer tablets. ACE Member will maintain a computer database of all fossil finds, digital photographs, and GPS track logs of all surveyed areas. ACE Member will also conduct detailed vegetation surveys of drought-stricken juniper tree die-off areas, including data collection of tree locations, tree mortality conditions, tree stand densities, and any evidence of pathogen and insect damages.
This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority:
Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Please contact ACE staff with questions about eligibility.
Qualifications:
Required
- Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
- Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
- Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
- A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
- Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.
- Ability and willingness to work long hours in extreme heat or humidity, hike several miles a day, and carry a pack weighing up to 20 pounds.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of scientific research, natural resources or scientific field work.
- Deep interest in paleontology, archaeology, and/or natural resource management.
- Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as scientific research, environmental science, natural resources, paleontology, geology or other related field.
