Human Resources 2022 Fall Semester Intern (Unpaid)

General Statement of Job

The Unpaid Human Resources Intern performs a wide range of projects related to HR compliance, recruiting, onboarding/orientation, employee benefits and basic personnel related clerical duties such as filing, and maintaining employment records. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills he or she may have acquired in school related particular areas of interest, and apply them in a professional setting.

Essential Functions

  • Provides general administrative support by entering, formatting, and printing information, organizing work, and relaying messages.
  • Researches and collects data for various HR initiatives.
  • Assists with recruitment efforts for all personnel.
  • Assists with preparing for new staff orientations and other meetings.
  • Participates in meetings, trainings, and employee events.
  • Conducts audits of personnel files and assists with filings to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Responds to all staff and employment inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • The Unpaid Human Resources Intern must have the ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality, and the ability to establish excellent rapport with staff and general public.
  • Follows safe working practices and has a working knowledge of safety practices and procedures in accordance with the City’s Safety and Health Program.
Additional Duties:
Assist all HR Department personnel with other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Current enrolled student of an accredited college/university with a degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Communications, Psychology or any other related field.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities -
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and experience working with databases.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Must have excellent organization skills.
  • Able to interact in a courteous and professional manner at all times.
  • Work independently as well as with a team.
  • Goal oriented to meet task deadlines.
  • Willing to engage, learn, and have fun.

Technical Requirements

Ability to use standard office equipment, including multi-line telephones, personal computers, word processing, and data base applications.

Working Conditions

The duties of this position include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, walking, lifting (up to 20 pounds), grasping, talking, and hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions.
The majority of duties are performed in an office setting; and employees may remain in a seated position for extended periods of time.
Conditions of Internship
The internship is related to an educational purpose and there is no guarantee or expectation that the activity will result in employment with the City.
The education received by the Intern from the internship is for the express benefit of the Intern.
The Intern does not replace or displace any employee of the City.
The Intern will receive direct and close supervision by an appropriate supervisor.
The City does not derive an immediate advantage from the activities performed by the Intern.
The intern is not entitled to wages or any compensation or benefits for the time spent in the internship.
