Digital Asset Management Internship (September-May)

Digital Asset Management Internship
New York Public Radio’s (NYPR) Digital Asset Management Team and Data Governance Council seek an intern to enhance archival collection access by helping us move from an uncontrolled folksonomy with over 214,000 unique tags to a structured topic taxonomy consisting of just over 4200 topics.

Throughout the school year, the intern will get hands-on experience forward-mapping legacy topic tags from three separate content information systems to one newly selected controlled vocabulary of topics (based on the Associated Press Metadata Services). The forward-mapped topics will be applied to assets in NYPR’s newly acquired digital asset management system (DAMS).

These efforts will bring collections to a more advanced stage of digital preservation following recommendations from the NDSA Levels of Digital Preservation Matrix. This work will also improve access to these collections following recommendations from the DLF Levels of Born-Digital Access Model.

Responsibilities
  • Forward-mapping folksonomy tags from legacy content information systems to new structured taxonomy and applying tags in DAMS.
  • Using transcripts and other extant metadata to perform original topic-focused cataloging for previously untagged or insufficiently tagged assets in the DAMS.
  • Reviewing newly introduced “candidate topics”, and coordinating Data Governance Council change-request meetings

Qualifications
  • Interest in a taxonomies, ontologies, or knowledge information management
  • Enrollment in library and information science or archives course of study
  • Knowledge of metadata and archival encoding standards, and experience with cataloging standards and practices preferred, but not required

Eligibility
In order to be eligible for an internship at New York Public Radio you must be currently enrolled in, or have graduated no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship to which you are applying for, from an accredited undergraduate or graduate program.
