WNYC and Gothamist Newsroom Internship (September-May)

WNYC and Gothamist Newsroom Internship
The WNYC and Gothamist newsroom is looking for a curious, enthusiastic and ambitious intern to join us for the 2022-2023 school year. Our interns have a hands-on opportunity to further develop their reporting, writing, and editing skills for broadcast and web.
The WNYC and Gothamist newsroom strives to make the New York City metro region work for the people who live here, and has ambitious goals to reach new, diverse audiences through impactful, audience-focused journalism. This internship is an exciting opportunity to learn how to produce high-quality content across several platforms.
This intern will have an opportunity to work on several teams. Our newsroom covers New York and New Jersey government and services, race and justice, health and science, politics and elections, housing and the workforce, public safety, transportation, education, and culture. Interns often tackle assignments in several different areas throughout their time in the newsroom. Interns may also be placed on our radio production teams, helping pitch and produce local journalism for Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
Broadcast experience is not a requirement, but applicants who have some journalism experience outside the classroom are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in newsroom training and become proficient in WNYC and Gothamist workflows for both web and air
  • Take on assignments for original news stories that are clear, thorough, fair, timely and accurate.
  • Pitch stories on engaging topics within our newsroom beats with a focus on producing local content for Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Gothamist.
  • Consistently meet deadlines
  • Collaborate with other interns, reporters, producers and editors regularly
  • Participate fully as a member of the newsroom by attending and contributing to newsroom and team meetings

Qualifications
  • At least one previous internship at a reputable news organization
  • Current student or recent graduate from an accredited undergrad or grad program with a graduation date on or after December 2021.
  • Eligible to work in the US without sponsorship

Eligibility
In order to be eligible for an internship at New York Public Radio you must be currently enrolled in, or have graduated no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship to which you are applying for, from an accredited undergraduate or graduate program.

Additional Information
This role is a paid internship with eligibility for college credit. WNYC internships pay $17.50/hour. The internship will commence on September 12th and run through May 5th and interns are expected to work 15 hours per week. The exact schedule and hours will be determined with the finalist.
This internship will operate in a hybrid (remote/in-person) environment: we strongly prefer candidates to work in our New York SoHo office at least eight hours per week. In order to be eligible, you must be authorized to work in the United States and preferably live/work in a commutable distance of our office.
Candidates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless NYPR has approved a specific religious or medical exemption in advance of the first day of work. At this time, NYPR defines being fully vaccinated as having received two Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations or one Johnson and Johnson vaccination.

Application Requirements
Please submit your resume, cover letter and at least two relevant work examples. Only complete applications will be considered. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, July 20th at 5pm ET.
