PhD Scientist/Engineer, Batteries and Electrochemistry (5977)

We are currently seeking a Scientist/Engineer for our Polymer Science and Materials Chemistry Practice in Natick, MA. In this role, you will work as part of a mutl-disciplinary team to solve challenging, real-world problems related to batteries, energy storage, and electrochemistry for our clients. You will be tasked with gathering and interpreting data for Failure Analysis investigations, designing and running battery cycling and abuse experiments, and presenting your findings both within Exponent and to our clients.

This position may require some travel (limited during COVID-19) and will involve collaboration with scientists and engineers from other Exponent offices and practices covering a wide range of industries. Your long-term success at Exponent will require you to continue to grow professionally as an expert in your field, as well as develop business by obtaining new projects and bringing new clients to the firm.

You will be responsible for: 
  • Conducting hands-on failure analyses and quality assessments of batteries and battery-containing devices
  • Designing and executing laboratory tests to support battery failure analysis, abuse testing, and quality assessment projects
  • Performing materials characterization, using techniques such as photography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning, and electrochemical analysis techniques
  • Analyzing data and reporting results at an appropriate technical level for the intended audience
  • Organizing and managing multi-disciplinary projects
  • Communicating and working effectively with other Exponent staff at all levels of the company

You will have the following skills and qualifications: 
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or similar field
  • Knowledge of electrochemistry is required, specialized knowledge on lithium-ion or other battery technology is preferred. Work/research experience with advanced battery chemistries (secondary lithium metal/solid state) is a plus
  • Strong laboratory hands-on experience is required. Experience working on battery (or coin cell) assembly, cathode/anode/electrolyte development, or battery cycling testing are preferred. Experience performing battery materials characterization via CT/SEM/XRD/NMR a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required. Must be able to convey complex technical information to individuals in engineering, business, legal and related industries
  • Ability to work within project teams with strong desire to contribute and collaborate
  • Potential for technical and project managerial leadership
