Electrical Electronics Technical Specialist

We Are:
Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.

We are strategic risk takers, innovators, and collaborators. We are engineers, scientists, technicians, administrative professionals. We are 1,800 employees advancing knowledge for the benefit of humankind. Fermilab has been at the forefront of particle physics for more than 40 years. We build world-leading accelerators and detectors to conduct some of the most advanced particle physics experiments possible. We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.

Fermilab's Accelerator Division operates, maintains, and improves the laboratory's accelerator complex, beam lines and beam targets. We drive scientific discovery by delivering particle beams for experiments. We also conduct accelerator physics research and design and build accelerators to extend the scientific reach of existing facilities.

The Fermilab Accelerator Division (AD) seeks a highly motivated Electrical/ Electronics Technical Specialist candidate to join the Department. Under general direction will be responsible for
installation/maintenance on: Fermilab engineered, phase-control, pulse-power rectifier equipment; and Fermilab engineered regulation and control electronics (both analog and digital); and commercial switch-mode power supplies. Will collaborate with engineering staff on special projects. Will occasionally perform outdoor operational maintenance of pulsed-power substations to include 15kV medium-voltage switchgear, electro-mechanical vacuum breakers, and rectifier transformers (dry type & oil).

You Will:

  • Perform bench and in-field trouble-shooting
  • Design and assemble specialized test fixtures to test and evaluate analog/digital circuit performance
  • Perform light engineering duties to include determination of proper conductor sizes, resistor sizing, etc.
  • Access into beam-line enclosures to perform inspections, terminate signal cables and dc transmission, connect magnet loads, and attach thermal interlocks
  • Procure parts and equipment to support work activities
  • Generate CAD drawings of circuit schematics and wiring diagram
  • Install and program PLC systems and I/O
  • Procure technical equipment, parts or supplies for assigned projects. Interacts with outside vendors to resolve technical issues.
  • Generate written procedures and hazard analyses
  • Observe and enforce safety rules and regulations to provide for a safe working environment.
  • Terminate signal, control, and power cables to include circular MIL spec connectors, D-Sub, RF (BNC, lemo, etc.), and power cables up to 500 MCM
