CDC Fellowship in Global Health Security - Setting Strategy and Communicating Impact

CDC Office and Location: A fellowship is available with the Global Health Security Team within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
The Center for Global Health (CGH) is at the forefront of CDC’s efforts to work with countries to build their ability to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats. The Global Health Security Team, within CGH’s Office of the Director, supports this work by: (1) articulating the impact of CDC’s global health security efforts, (2) extending the impact of CDC’s technical expertise through multilateral initiatives and organizations, and (3) representing CDC’s global health security work within the US Government interagency.
Research Project: The selected participant will collaborate with CDC staff deployed overseas, the World Health Organization, country governments, and U.S. interagency partners (e.g. USAID, Department of State, Department of Defense, National Security Council) to support initiatives like the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) and International Health Regulations and advance global health security.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may support the following:
- Support development of global health security objectives, collaborating with technical experts from across the US CDC.
- Assist with internal communications across the agency related to global health security and the GHSA, an alliance of more than 70 countries that encourages multi-sectoral collaboration, including organizing and preparing materials for CDC-wide quarterly meetings.
- Contribute to the development of external communications: providing input on GHSA-related social media, webpage updates, media stories and briefings, and reports to policy and key stakeholders, and the public.
- Build knowledge and understanding of the evolving field of global health security, keeping abreast of relevant WHO and CDC/other USG guidelines and priorities for post-pandemic preparedness planning and implementation of the International Health Regulations.
Learning Objectives:
- Enhance understanding of global health security architecture and country implementation, US Government’s role, and CDC’s leadership in combatting infectious disease threats in countries around the world.
- Enhance ability to interpret and communicate critical technical global health information to a wide range of audiences.
- Improve understanding of US Government collaboration for global health security, an administration priority.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 11, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
