Digital Platforms Intern - Fall/Winter 2022

Program Duration: October 3, 2022 - April 14, 2023

INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO: This internship will be spent with the team that programs and curates NPR’s digital platforms including our homepage, mobile apps, smart speakers, social media and newsletters. You’ll help ensure NPR’s content gets to our intended audiences -- and you’ll help drive efforts to expand our audiences. You’ll also learn from and improve our content based on data analysis and engagement insights.
This position will have some overlap with the Digital News team, which reports and writes breaking news and feature stories for NPR’s digital platforms, with opportunities to pitch stories and projects and help shape coverage.

  • Work with members of the Digital Platforms team to curate experiences across digital platforms, including digital audio experiences, to appeal to young and diverse audiences. Pitch creative opportunities to highlight NPR’s signature journalism on our digital platforms.
  • Assist with data analysis to better understand audience preferences and habits, with a special focus on understanding how stories perform across reading and listening digital platforms. Find ways to apply that analysis to the programming of digital platforms and content creation.
  • Review and analyze competitive news mobile apps and digital experiences to provide insights on the content and features that could help NPR reach younger and more diverse audiences.
  • Participate in staff meetings and projects as required

  • LOCATION: This internship has the flexibility to be onsite at our Washington, DC office, fully remote, and/or a hybrid version of the two based on the intern’s preference. 
  • EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship. 

  • An interest in the intersection of journalism and emerging technologies and a passion for thinking about and building public radio’s future audience
  • Familiarity with content performance data and data analysis
  • Excellent writing, research, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently, quickly, and accurately under deadline pressure
  • Candidates should be interested in news and current events
  • Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
  • Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture

  • Strong research skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Knowledge of NPR programming
  • In addition to the regular application items, candidates must upload/attach a writing sample.

  • 40 hours per week around the intern’s schedule
