Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse

THE POSITION
The Hennepin County Public Health Clinic (PHC) is seeking to fill several Medical Assistant (MA) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) positions for people with an interest in and experience working with a diverse population in a public health setting. These positions will provide clinical support services to clients and families of refugees and those dealing with tuberculosis and STD/HIV conditions.

The MA and LPN will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides primary care and acute care services to a wide variety of clients.

The PHC is a respected leader in providing sexual health services, comprehensive testing and treatment for tuberculosis, and refugee health exams. It is home to the Red Door Clinic, Minnesota’s largest HIV and sexually transmitted infection clinic. The Red Door Clinic has been providing culturally sensitive and sexually affirming services for the last 51 years. The mission of PHC is to reduce health disparities, increase access, and promote health across communities with specialized services that value evidence-based, client-centered care to create empowered and healthy communities.
  
These positions will be filled at the Medical Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse level based on the candidate's qualifications.

Medical Assistant: $42,640.00 - $54,244.59 Annually                   
Licensed Practical Nurse: $42,640.00 - $60,007.76 Annually 

Location and hours:
These positions are located at the Health Services Building in downtown Minneapolis at 525 Portland Avenue South, Minneapolis MN 55415. Current work hours for these positions are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. These positions will require working one evening shift per week once the clinic resumes evening hours on Mondays and Wednesdays until 7:30 p.m. No overnight or holiday shifts are required. The people in these positions will be cross trained to help staff other county clinics in Public Health Clinical Services.

Effective September 1, 2021, all new job offers are conditional based on the candidate being fully vaccinated for COVID-19. “Fully vaccinated” means 14 days after receiving the second dose in a two-dose vaccination series approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on a full or emergency-use basis, or 14 days after receiving a single-dose vaccine approved by the FDA on a full or emergency-use basis. In these positions, you will:
  • Interview clients presenting for care; take vital signs and complete required documentation within the EPIC system.
  • Assist nurse practitioners and medical staff with exams and treatments; administer immunizations, draw blood, and maintain vaccine inventory and storage. 
  • Perform limited lab tests, such as urine or sputum sample collection; assist in maintaining lab documentation, perform laboratory proficiency tests, and prepare lab specimens for transport.
  • Manage inventory and stock medications and supplies; assist with packing, stocking, and transport of supplies within the clinic.
  • Perform clean up after medical exams; maintain aseptic environment according to cleaning policies and schedules and clean and maintain clinical equipment including instruments, refrigerators, cabinets, and counter surfaces.
  • Schedule follow up appointments with clients utilizing Epic, the clinic's electronic health record system. 

Need to have:
  • For hire as a Medical Assistant:
  • Diploma or associate degree from an accredited Medical Assistant program that includes a clinical externship. 
  • Current certification or eligibility for certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); or as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • For hire as a Licensed Practical Nurse:
  • Completion of an approved program in practical nursing and successful completion of the State of Minnesota's (or equivalent) nursing exam.
  • Possession of a license as a Licensed Practical Nurse authorized by the State of Minnesota.
  • Access to reliable transportation to travel to clinics within Hennepin County.

Nice to have:
  • Six or more months of experience as a MA or LPN providing services to medically underserved populations in a clinic setting.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Experience:
  • Working in a community health setting and/or working with diverse populations.
  • Using electronic health records to schedule and register clients and document client data/care.
  • In records management (e.g., filing charts and gathering, scanning, and abstracting chart materials).
  • In phlebotomy.
  • Knowledge of:
  • Community resources and publicly funded assistance programs.
  • Appropriate standard and emergency procedures for handling sterile/contaminated materials. 
  • Sensitivity to the unique needs and challenges faced by a diverse and marginalized client base who are experiencing health disparities.
