Entry Level Materials Engineer

Do you want to work in a dynamic environment that focuses on exciting technology development in a broad spectrum of technical disciplines, combined with an ability to provide step-change benefits to Naval Nuclear Propulsion plants with new component insertions? This team has a diverse background of people with experience in creating novel design solutions, advanced material development & testing, structural evaluations, cutting edge thermal-hydraulic modeling and testing, and advanced manufacturing techniques to design heat exchangers for back-fits in the current fleet and brand-new designs. We partner with organizations throughout NNL, BPMI, commercial vendors and shipyards to maximize system benefits and cost savings. The unit is seeking a driven, team-player to advance the unit mission with a passion and skill set in component design, with a focus on steam generators. The ideal candidate will have a component design experience including aspects such as functionality requirements, system interfaces, design software and novel design configurations. Because the design engineer will be interfacing with personnel for testing, thermal-hydraulic, structural and materials aspects of steam generators, experience in these disciplines will be beneficial. Collaboration with organizations within NNL and external to the Program are envisioned to leverage skills and resources to maximize progress on heat exchanges by leveraging additional resources and broadening the diversity of team talent. Team member experience with the ability to work to a consensus towards pragmatic solutions are necessary to effectively reach decisions. In addition to this technical skillset, candidates should possess a open mind set with innovative and out-of-the-box solutions to challenge paradigms to succeed in this fast-paced, speed-to-market environment.

REQUIRED SKILLS *

Associate:

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university required.


Intermediate:

BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year of relevant experience

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Heat Exchanger design, analysis or testing experience
  • Experience collaborating with teams at different locations
  • Strong communicator with diverse organizations and technical disciplines
  • Ability to develop creative solutions and support non-conventional ideas with sound technical underpinning
  • Ability to self-identify plans and approaches to achieve resolution to complex technical problems
  • Capability to successfully balance technology development, combined with component insertions
  • Courage to accept termination of endeavors when prohibitive barriers are encountered
