Set Designer for Arts 501(c)(3) (Residential)

This is a paid summer position at a full-schedule, residential arts program! The working season for staff begins on June 23rd, 2022 and ends on August 22nd, 2022.

Buck's Rock Camp, a 501(c)(3) public charity, is hiring a wide variety of Camp Counselors for its upcoming season in 2022. Camp Counselors arrive in late June and reside on-site for two months through August while working with kids and teens ages 10-17. Exact job responsibilities depend on specific placements but are limited within a range to accommodate precise roles. Camp Counselors work in a thriving community of nearly 400 adult and young artists.

As part of a larger effort to hire professionals for its theater department, Buck's Rock Camp is hiring Set Designers/Stage Carpenters.

The Set Design staff is responsible for the safe, successful operation of the designated shop area at Buck's Rock, Set Design. They see to a variety of duties and responsibilities that support stage productions (and related activities) across camp throughout the summer. Working predominantly, but not necessarily, to support plays and shows in a stage environment, Set Design staff works together as a team, under the supervision of a shop manager (Head of Shop), to design and implement sound assets for production while liaising with directors and managers in other shop and performing arts areas; attending production and all-staff meetings; and otherwise fulfilling the Set Design-specific needs of Buck's Rock's annual program that includes more than a dozen shows (of varying size and complexity) across two months.

Notable duties include:

  • maintaining the facilities, equipment, and materials used by Set Design throughout the summer
  • developing with fellow staff a program and schedule that sufficiently satisfies the demand, education, and interest of campers
  • working with other Set Designers/Carpenters to delineate Set-related tasks and responsibilities, often dedicating individual efforts/designs to individual plays/shows/events
  • assisting the design, load-in, management, and strike of sets used in performances throughout the summer
  • where applicable, attending regular Head of Shop meetings facilitated by Program Coordinator(s)
  • attending regular all-staff meetings for routine updates and news related to camp in the summer
  • assisting in the de-winterization and winterization of performing arts spaces across camp prior to and following the arrival and departure of enrolled campers

Note: At least 270 course hours of undergraduate study (or comparable work experience) related to Music required. 360 or higher preferred.
