Overview

Are you a problem solver and project manager that enjoys working with an interdisciplinary team? Come join the Solid Waste Management Programs Certification Section! You'll be joining a well-established, cooperative team that values innovative and strategic thinking.
 
The field of solid waste covers a wide variety of topics and is multidisciplinary by nature. This position works as part of the Solid Waste Management Program team within VT DEC. Primary responsibilities include monitoring closed landfills, completing post closure certifications, and solid waste facility certification to protect public health and the environment.
 
As part of the Certifications Section, this position will have the opportunity to work on a variety of tasks including emerging contaminants, water hydrogeology, special waste management, and potentially waste reduction, reuse, and recycling efforts. Typical duties will include working with solid waste haulers and facility operators, working with municipalities and solid waste districts, businesses, and the public, to improve solid waste management in Vermont. Duties are typically performed in an office setting, but frequent field work is required. The Program office is based out of Montpelier, VT with the eventual opportunity to telework upon supervisor approval.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Experience reviewing technical studies, comparing testing results, and treatment systems.
  • Experience in technical writing.
  • Experience with data management and analysis.
  • Experience communicating to the public and diverse audiences about environmental issues.
  • Knowledge of solid waste, hydrogeology, government regulations a plus.

Environmental Factors

Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours may be required. Strong and conflicting opinions may be encountered.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, or an environmental or natural resources field AND one (1) year or more at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources field.
OR
Associate's degree in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, or an environmental or natural resources field AND three (3) years or more at or above a technical level in an environmental or natural resources field.
OR
Master's degree or higher in an environmental or natural resources related field.
OR
Three (3) years or more as an Environmental Technician III.
OR
One (1) year or more as an Environmental Analyst I.
