English Language Learner

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS) is seeking an education technician to enhance the achievement of our English language learners (ELLs) at PATHS. This person will be working with small groups of PATHS students to support the acquisition of program content-area knowledge and skills as well promoting English language development skills. The successful candidates will be kind, patient, flexible, and discreet; experienced at working with culturally and linguistically diverse students, and comfortable in a hands-on shop setting. The successful candidate will be fluent in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Assists individuals and small groups of students in various CTE programs, preferably in the students’ home language.
  • Orients students to school and program practices and procedures, in consultation with PATHS ELL teacher and PATHS program instructors.
  • Alerts instructor(s) to the physical and emotional needs of individual students.
  • Works with individuals and small groups of students of similar cultural and linguistic backgrounds to maintain their native language, while building English language skills.
  • Reviews and reinforces classroom lessons and learning experiences with students.
  • Continues planned instructional activities during the instructor's temporary absence from the classroom.
  • Assists instructor(s) in carrying out classroom activities; prepares slides, charts, and other instructional materials requiring knowledge of the CTE program subject matter.
  • Assists in administering tests, assessments, and examinations.
  • Helps students locate materials; assists in the direction of student activities.
  • Supervises students as they move throughout the building and between classrooms.
  • Assists in the supervision of students during the loading and unloading of buses
  • Performs related work, as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Language proficiency at the Advanced Mid level, or higher, on the ACTFL Language Test for Interpretation.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, or employees.
  • Ability to interact with staff, students, parents, and others in an open, friendly, business-like manner.
  • EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:Approval as an Educational Technician III by the Maine Department of Education. In the alternative, Maine provisional or professional teacher certification.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a college degree that includes nine credit hours related to an education field such as behavior management or classroom strategies, and to candidates who have at least one year of experience working with students in structured situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Outside duty may be required.
