Community Outreach Coordinator (Student Internship)

Ward 11 is located in the south-central part of Minneapolis, Ward 11 has residential neighborhoods, vibrant local business corridors, and excellent access to parks. The Council Member serving Ward 11 is Emily Koski, who as a Council Member is dedicated to representing the values, and the voices of the Ward 11 community on the Minneapolis City Council.
The primary purpose of this internship is to create and implement a non-partisan program to educate and connect Ward 11 residents to the city and its activities. Interns may focus on engaging specific underrepresented communities within Ward 11, neighborhood organizations, and local businesses. Constituent services work may include but is not limited to logistics planning for community events, conducting research, compiling reports, and travel between City Hall and Ward 11 locations. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide constituent service including, but not limited to, constituent communications, managing constituent cases, and outreach efforts.
  • Organize, facilitate, and attend meetings with neighborhood associations, community groups, organizations, or individuals as required.
  • Monitor ward and City issues, current events, and relevant legislation.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with the Council Member, staff, and constituents.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and complete deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong critical thinking, organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, and function both as a self-starter and as a part of a team.
  • Compose communication materials including, but not limited to, letters, emails, flyers, and social media posts. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Enrolled as a Sophomore, Junior or Senior in college/university.
  • Students participating are required to commit an average of 10-20 hours per week, with a maximum of 29 hours per week, for the duration of 10-12 weeks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Software.
  • Ability to meet and engage with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use word processing, spreadsheets, and other software programs.
  • Ability to work independently, handling multiple tasks simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Current or past coursework in political science, media and communications, journalism, public relations, or related fields.
  • Interest in and basic knowledge of local, state, and national politics.
